The Spiritual Life is Only Lived by Eating a Balanced Diet Which Sometimes Includes Broccoli
by Les Herron
Most of us like to eat the same thing on a consistent basis. We have the same cereal, toast, or microwave product for breakfast, the same sandwich or salad for lunch, and the same drink over and over and over again. Some of us have it down so well that we know what brand of each product we like when we go to the grocery store and others know exactly what they will eat from each restaurant they enter. But what happens if we limit our diet to just a few of our favorite things? If that happens we will be sorely lacking in so many areas. Vitamins and minerals will be in short supply in our bodies and our organs will not function properly. We may not notice the problems immediately but eventually time will show our deficiencies
and we’ll pay the price for an unbalanced, undernourished diet. The writer of Ephesians makes it clear that the 5-fold ministry gifts were given by Christ for the express purpose of building up and training the church, yet most of us experience training only under one pastor-teacher or under several of the very same brand name. In the same way we enjoy 'having it our way' at fast food joints we enjoy having it our way when it comes to being taught. We want our style of delivery and we want the content we want. One of the main problems with only eating what tastes good to us is that the deficiencies that occur naturally from being 'trained' by only one individual will eventually show as we… Gain too much
fat which keeps us from living a full, free, and active life. Fail to gain muscle which will keep us from being able to do the heavy lifting required of us and endure the course that is set before us. Neglect internal organs and have trouble with them which may lead to having to be placed on artificial life machines for the remainder of our time on earth. Lack proper backbone strength and structure which may cause us to bow to anything that comes along. Lose the clarity of our vision and the sharpness of our hearing, thereby fail to hear the still small voice or see the narrow way. So, when it comes to teachers and preachers remember to eat your broccoli!
