How To Know If Your Child Is Constipated

by Jeff Foster

Your child is having a problem with constipation if there are fewer than three bowel movements a week, the stools are hard and dry, or they are difficult for your child to pass; and if your child is having trouble with any of these symptoms beyond a couple of weeks the constipation is chronic.

The causes of constipation among children are much the same as they are for adults.

The onset of constipation symptoms are increased when your child doesn”t consume enough water or juices. And it”s not just the drinking habits, but eating habits as well.

Many kids today not only don”t get enough fiber in their diet, but they consume too much fat and refined sugars and this will greatly increase the chances of constipation.

Fiber is indeed a big key in the diet.

Encourage your child to eat fruits, vegetables, cereals, and whole grain foods. Developing healthy eating habits early on with your child is not only beneficial during their childhood, but remains so throughout their lifetime.

Constipation in your child can also occur when they switch from breast milk or formula to cow”s milk and so can be true when you child goes from baby food to solid foods.

Even certain medications that a child may take during periods of illnesscan add to equation and contribute to constipation.

You shouldn”t be overly concerned with occasional constipation in your child as it is a quite common occurrence which usually will self correct. However, if the problem becomes chronic or persistent you should consult with your pediatrician.
