The Risks of Vitamin B12 Deficiency

by Jeremy Maddock

Having a serious lack of Vitamin B12 in your body can lead to a number of dire health problems, including heart disease, strokes, and Alzheimer’s.

This is due to the fact that B12 works together with folic acid and Vitamin B6 to control the body’s level of homocysteine. Too much homocysteine can lead to a higher risk of serious diseases, including those mentioned above.

To keep your risk level down, it is crucial that you maintain a proper level of Vitamin B12 in your system. Eating B12-rich foods, such as meat, milk, poultry, eggs, fish, and shellfish is one way to do this.

For vegetarians, however, and those over 65, diet alone may not be enough to ensure a high level of this essential nutrient. In many cases, taking a Vitamin B12 supplement can reduce your risk of contracting serious health problems. It also comes with the added benefit of enhanced energy levels for all who take it regularly.
