Book Description Spinal Stabilization - The New Science of Back Pain, 2nd Edition is the most comprehensive and scientifically accurate resource for the general public on the subject of low back pain. Updated and expanded to include the most current research regarding low back pain and its treatment, this easy-to-read guide provides readers with 'need to know' information about the spine, effectively taking the mystery out of back pain and its treatment. Based upon sound and current research, 'Spinal Stabilization' describes how the spine and its muscles are intended to work, and how this changes once back pain sets in. New to the second edition is a clear discussion of the critical differences between stabilization exercises used by people with back pain and those who want a more high-performance, athletic spine. This is a key area author Rick Jemmett felt compelled to address. "There is still a significant amount of confusion in the rehabilitation, fitness and sports conditioning professions as to what truly constitiutes therapeutic stabilization exercises. The better quality research is actually quite clear on this yet many people remain stuck on the idea that exercising on a ball will correct low back pain. Some low back pain patients might feel better temporarily with such programs, but we now have the ability to do so much more than this. Instead of simply reducing the symptoms for a short while, we have the ability to achieve a true correction of the problem." Spinal Stabilization, 2nd Edition is divided into two sections. The first describes in detail the scientifically proven Australian approach of therapeutic segmental stabilization exercise. Clear descriptions along with illustrations and photos give readers the tools they need to correctly perform these important exercises. The second section discusses the use of 'Integrated Training' in sport-specific conditioning programs. This involves the simultaneous training of the body's stability, balance and strength systems for maximum athletic performance.

A great overview of the cause of low back pain March 25, 2008 Although this book seems a little expensive for its size, it provides the best and easiest to understand explanation (with accompanying diagrams) of why back pain happens that I have ever read. This makes it an excellent resource for anyone who has suffered from back pain, including young athletes. Fitness instructors and personal trainers would do good to study this material, since there are so many people out there who struggle with chronic back pain and are looking for solutions. Physical therapists, doctors, and other professionals would do well to provide this as a resource for their patients and clients. I somewhat agree with other reviewers who have complaints about the exercise portion. I find these exercises are excellent; however, for the majority of the population it is difficult to do even the simplest of these exercises correctly without deep knowledge of the form and technique required, or feedback from someone who has this knowledge. However, just for the clear explanation of how back pain works, this is an excellent book to have.
Very informative March 6, 2008 This book does a very good job explaining why it is so important to build up your core muscles. It has many exercises to help you do this.
Ready, Set, Be Fit January 5, 2008 Great program, format, instructions and photos. Easy to follow and progress from one level to another. Well organized. These excercises will produce results whether you are a beginner or advanced. Great for recovery therapy.
Spinal stabilization November 24, 2007 Rick Jemmet gives a very thorough description of both the build-up of the spine and how to "cure" the pain. The best back-pain book I've ever read and it has helped me a lot.
Simply the best exercise regime for your core! November 15, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I would like to join the chorus of reviewers that loved this book and send my highest recommendation to anyone looking for a book to either rehabilitate an injured/painful back, or to athletes who recognize that their core is the foundation of all their skill.
I had been told about this book by a friend who said that it had many exercises focusing on toning the almost imperceptibly small muscles that are vital for a healthy spine. I found that this book began with simple, though non-trivial exercises which could help almost anyone, even someone with a seriously impaired back and progressed through exercises for athletes which are very difficult. I cannot believe that one of the reviewers considered these exercises old-hat, something that everyone in a gym has seen, or that they can do. I know many very highly skilled and I've yet to find anyone who would consider a closed-eye balance stand on an exercise ball while moving one's arms to be trivial! Personally, I think that many of these exercises can be very easily adapted to a non-gym environment. For example, a person with back issues might try some of them while sitting in a chair at work (obviously more stable than a balance ball) and still get very positive core stability benefit.
The range of solid exercises that the author lists based from a balance ball should encourage everyone to set up their own exercise room at home. Don't clutter up your space with weight machines, bench press, or the latest informercial super-gee whiz abercizer. Buy a good, burst proof ball and a pump so you can adjust the inflation levels and keep the floor clear to practice on it. If you must use weights a couple matched dumbbells or better yet weighted balls will allow you to strengthen your core and increase your balance until you have a dancers level of poise, if you so wish.
I had a difficult time getting this book a year ago, two different Amazon affiliates sent me "sorry but no longer available notices". I eventually found a copy directly from the very small, limited run publisher that printed this text. I am very glad that I persisted and jumped through all the hoops that I did to get this book. If it is presently available with a simple "click and pay" you owe it to yourself to get this book.
