Amazon.com Review Given the exotic nature of so many bodywork practices, readers will be surprised to learn that they can improve their health and well-being with something as simple as walking. But that's just what Los Angeles physical therapist Brourman asserts here. Walking isn't just a great physical and meditative exercise, she points out, it's the physical activity we do most often. And just as imbalance, poor posture and untoned muscles can lead to painful injuries, correcting the way you walk and strengthening and stretching your muscles can speed your recovery or prevent you from getting hurt in the first place. Because Brourman doesn't have the luxury of seeing every reader personally, a great deal of the book is devoted to diagnosing and solving individual gait problems--something that can be done, she says, because the standards of human symmetry are the same for everyone. "The truth is that height, weight, proportions, age, sex, and all other human features and options don't change the basic elements of a symmetrical walk," she writes. The instructions are reasonably easy to follow (although some readers may be disconcerted by a common experience--when you start thinking about how you should be doing something you do every day, you start to "forget" how you did it in the first place). Those who are suffering from pain in such places as the back and the knees may be most motivated to follow Brourman's instructions, but she makes it clear that just about everyone can benefit from a good walk.
Product Description Sherry Brourman P.T., teaches her straightforward and innovative method for balancing the body and eliminating pain. With a comprehensive, easy to understand self-evaluation, and illustrated stretching, strengthening and walking exercises, you can learn how to eliminate neck pain, back pain, hip pain, leg pain, knee pain and all types of structural pain, naturally, without surgery or drugs.

Think again about the Sandwich System December 27, 2008 Ann L. Rodiger (New York City) 2 out of 5 found this review helpful
Some of the information is in this book is great but the bottom line is quite troubling. The Sandwich Method of "squeezing my stomach and back muscles together as a means of generating musculoskeletal stability" pg. 7 didn't work at all for me. Basically I couldn't breathe much less bend in my hip joints so I could move down the street.
As a teacher of the F. M. Alexander Technique I see many people who are suffering with back pain. I understand that muscle tone is important. The method of arriving at tone and better balance can be much more subtle and useful. By directing the whole body and keeping the whole body in mind while working with back pain, one will be able to arrive at the appropriate muscle tone and also keep their ability to move.
We must consciously uncover our thoughts and movement habits that are in our own way of moving with our best balance. Then we can allow our own bodies to do what we already know -- when we get out of our own way things can function as they are meant to function. This process of learning takes time and is totally worth it.

a great reference for feet April 15, 2008 Davina Hunter (Bay Area CA) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I found the information in this book exciting, compelling and read it through from cover to cover. Finally someone's talking about feet!
As a former dancer and current teacher..I see a lot of mean treatment to the feet. Many of my personal concerns, hunches and observations were articulated. I am adding book to my library and recommended reading list.
I especially liked the way the author addressed and offered corrective measures for heel to floor contact. My own feet have suffered under my abuse in breaks, strains, burns and other mean injuries and I can tell you...doctors offer little in the way of truly useful information. Just a shot, a pill, a cast, a knife...it's terrible and frustrating.
I think we would be better served with this information in our elementary classrooms than having to memorize all the former president's birthdays and names!!!
It's no fun hurting and many of our hurts happen when we lack information and mishandle our bodies.
Some reviewers found her stories and writing style lacking..yes her verbage is at times goofy. Her reference to "buns" had me doing a couple of double takes to make sure I wasn't seeing things...
I personally liked the simplicity of the pictures/drawings. I would have enjoyed more..to demonstrate proper and improper form.
A video/dvd would be a great addition to this book to help us audio/visual learners.
I checked this book out from the library and have ordered my own copy. This information is highly useful for any dance, movement or fitness coach as well as anyone who is sick of putting their well being into the hands of others!
This book is a keeper.
This is a great book with a wealth of information and helped me immensely August 8, 2007 R. Hurwich 10 out of 12 found this review helpful
This book contains such a valuable wealth of knowledge for anyone, and especially for those in pain. I was having major back pains for years, and the tools that I received in this book took me to a much better place physically. I would have to take umberance with another reviewer on this book. As I was reading it I never noticed any typos, as I was actually trying to pay attention to the information, not concern myself with petty thing like tpyos. I think it's ridiculous to tell others not buy the book on this account. If you have any pain or want to get healthier, Do buy this book. In addition, there is certainly original material here in the way that the author has synergized the disciplines of Physical Therapy, Proper Posture, and Gait Correction. I'm not sure what the reviewer is looking for in original material, maybe snap your fingers and poof, you're better! We live in the real world, and this book has real, fresh answers.
This is such a valuable book for anyone, whether you are in pain or not! August 8, 2007 R. Hurwich 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
This book contains such a valuable wealth of knowledge for anyone, and especially for those in pain. I was having major back pains for years, and the tools that I received in this book took me to a much better place physically. I've read it all the way through twice, and although not every exercise applies to me, I learn new things each time I read it. The way Ms. Brourman has synergized the disciplines of Physical Therapy, Proper Posture, and Gait Correction is surely ahead of her time. Although all the work I did with Chiropractors and Orthopedic Doctors was valuable, it never really addressed the major problems of proper posture, gait, and muscle strength. My advice to others is to read the book and progress along at a slow yet deliberate rate. For anyone in pain looking for a "Quick Fix," good luck! It's a rare thing. Expect to do some work, but like myself, feeling good was certainly worth it in the end.
Extremely helpful, effective method to eliminate structural pain August 8, 2007 Grateful (MI USA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This book helped me to completely eliminate chronic hip pain that chiropractic care, massage, and extensive yoga addressed only temporarily. Any errors in the text are of miniscule importance when I compare them to the benefit I received from this very small book that is filled with the author's compassionate wisdom. I'm very grateful to Sherry Brourman for making the book available, despite any typos, and I highly recommend it to ANYONE suffering from structural pain as well as to people who are trying to prevent such pain from occurring.
