5 out of 5 stars A real help   November 18, 2009
Sharon E. Jokela (CA)
I am a web designer/programmer who has (had) the horrible habit of parking my body in a nose-to-screen slump for too many hours and leaving it there while I think. Otherwise, I'm pretty athletic - but was beginning to notice creaks and aches. After reading about the book in the San Francisco Chronicle, I bought it. I have been using the methods in this book for about 4 months. And have had the StretchSit Cushion for 3 months. I am feeling terrific and taller by 1/3 an inch. It is such a benefit to learn ways of helping/maintaining oneself - stretching the spine and correcting posture flaws while working and sleeping. Who would have thought! The creaks and aches are already mostly gone. The book's images and explanations are very easy to follow and give intuitive guidance which makes the concepts stick. My ham strings are still mostly like cement, but my inner corset is developing at a fine pace.

5 out of 5 stars Back-Pain Victims - there's hope!   November 17, 2009

Esther Gokhale's book is a must have for anyone with spine problems, back or neck pain. I have had chronic low back and neck pain for many years and have tried various therapies, chiropractic, accupuncture, massage, exercises, etc., none of which helped. I was about at the end of my tether when I read an article in the newspaper about Esther, her background and the research that went into writing this book. Esther's methods are simple and take very little time to do. They are based on correct posture and movement and can be easily incorporated into your daily life. I have never experienced such quick results from what seems like such little effort. I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Not just another back book - a whole different and effective approach   November 15, 2009

After working at tucking my pelvis, per instructions of physical therapists and chiropractors, my lower back pain was worsening. A simple adjustment in posture, which made sense intuitively and in terms of Gokhale's logic and evidence, has made all the difference. Even before attempting any of the lessons in the book, a shift in how I held my pelvis brought a lot of relief. More recently, I've been dealing with pain higher up than the original problem. This book helped me to understand what has been causing this pain and once again a change in posture, use of the "corset" muscles, has helped relieve that pain.

I haven't been able to discipline myself to follow all the lessons, but I've been able to gradually incorporate the knowledge in the book into my posture and body mechanics. It is as if the book has triggered my body's wisdom and my own intuition.

This is truly a different approach. I feel this is an extremely important book as it could change the current understanding of what correct posture is. As far as I can tell, what's considered correct is quite dysfunctional. I'd recommend that anyone with back pain read this book before investing a lot of time, money and energy in another approach!

The guidelines for correct posture and sleeping have made a huge difference in reducing my level of neck and back pain. The instructions are simply illustrated and results are immediate.

I wish I had this book years ago. I compressed two vertebrae in my spine when I was in my twenties. I wore a Jewitt brace for a year. Now I am seventy one, and what was once mild discomfort has become very distracting pain.

I was immediately struck with the author's notion that good posture is simply natural posture, and that poor posture seems to be more of a product of growing up in a modern industrialized country. Pictures of naked babies, naked toddlers, near naked teens, and adults in third world countries drive this point home. Even photographs of ancient statues attest to this view. Perhaps this is because adults in modern nations do not have to depend on the strength of their backs to survive. Anyway, the authors ask, "Remember When it Didn't Hurt?"

I just got the book and have only skimmed through it - trying out each of the exercises. Since I suffered a serious back injury, it wouldn't be fair for me to gritch about not being able to find any great pain reduction by using these exercises. I can say that the whole book is well written and well illustrated. It is beautiful. And the Amazon.com price is absurdly low. The exercises do not cause me any noteworthy discomfort. And I am impressed with Helen Barkan's, MD., PhD., Neurology, of MAYO CLINIC endorsement: "The greatest contribution ever made to non-surgical back pain treatment."

I plan to work this book very seriously. I don't want a risky surgical solution.
