Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.com Review
Some spine physicians estimate that half of the back and neck surgeries performed in the United States may be unnecessary. Treat Your Back Without Surgery puts you in charge of the relief and prevention of back and neck pain. Author Stephen Hochschuler, M.D., a board-certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in spine surgery and cofounder of the Texas Back Institute, and coauthor Bob Reznik, who developed the Texas Back Institute Back Pain Hotline, teach you how your spine works, what the causes of pain are, and what you can do about it. Recommended pain relievers include first-aid remedies, spine injections, Tai Chi, and acupuncture. The book also describes lesser-known therapies, such as the Alexander Technique, Rolfing, reflexology, Aston Patterning, and Ayurvedic medicine. Clear, well-illustrated exercises show exactly what to do to make your back stronger, more flexible, and injury resistant. You'll learn how to lift, stand, sit, drive, sleep, and play recreational sports to minimize back stress. Because sometimes self-help isn't enough, Hochschuler and Reznik also discuss when you should go to the doctor and, as your last resort, how to choose a surgeon. Put this book in the hands of anyone suffering back pain and especially anyone considering back surgery. --Joan Price

5 out of 5 stars I Almost Took My Own Life-THANK YOU FOR THIS BOOK   February 18, 2005

My name is Peter Vincent Cannice and I live in the Phoenix, Arizona area. I am 37 years old and have been suffering from severe back pain for all too long now. I understand what others are going through-I am there with you or HAVE been there where you are now.

Although I am looking at my 2nd surgery in the middle of March, without this book by Stephen Hochschuler, I think I would not be around to write to you today. I am having an artificial disc replacement surgery, by the Grace of God, which was just approved in November of 2004. Dr. Hochschuler, a great surgeon that I met with in person, as a result of my pain and reading his book, is a man of wisdom and a man who understands the severe and chronic nature of back pain.

This great book clearly will give you a number of Non-Surgical alternatives that will be helpful to you. Whether it is your neck, back or even leg pain (or any sort of chronic pain-for that matter), you can rest assured that you will be purchasing a book that will offer you some peace of mind and some relief.

You can email me at HorsePete@aol.com if you would like to talk or should you ever need support. I am in severe pain at this moment but I can see the end of the rainbow as a result of reading this book. The alternatives are great ones and I've tried all of them at this point. I have no alternative, at this point, other than surgery and I pray that I make it through this very intense surgery in March of 2005. If you read this book you will learn that you are NOT ALONE, that your pain is REAL and that there really IS hope for you. I PROMISE YOU THIS!

Please don't give up. Hang on and know that things are going to get better. This book gave me techniques to get through the day and ultimately I hold it responsible for getting me to the point that I am at today. And now I am writing a book of my own-on Chronic Pain and Alternatives. It will be free. And you can have one as a gift for the peace that I received in reading this wonderful book.

GOOD LUCK TO YOU. TAKE A GREAT AND DEEP BREATH AND REACH OUT IF YOU NEED HELP. HELP IS OUT THERE AND PEOPLE REALLY CARE AND UNDERSTAND.

My heart goes out to you.

Peter Cannice

5 out of 5 stars The Best Book on the BACK that I have EVER read   October 5, 2004
Peter Cannice (Phoenix, Arizona)

I have had chronic back pain for 2 years-so bad that I have considered taking my own life. Reading this book gave me hope, brought me up to date and allowed me to continue with therapy. I am now looking forward to possibly getting an artificial disk operation so this 36 year old male can get back to taking care of his family and kids. My background is in Medicine and this book offers it all-from the lay person to the Medical Docotor. I highly suggest this book over MANY, MANY others. You can email me at HorsePete@aol.com with ANY questions you may have. My name is Peter Cannice, of Phoenix, Arizona, and I am a survivor because of this book.

3 out of 5 stars OK book, but could use more information   April 10, 2000

This book is pretty good for those who have very little or no knowledge on the subject of back pain. However, it offers very little to anyone who has studied the subject with some effort. I was hoping for some new insights on treating my own back pain when I purchased this book and got virtually no new information to help my situation.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Information   April 4, 2000

This book provides GREAT information on all forms of treatment. It reviews everything from traditional to preventative remedies, and also gives tips on keeping your back healthy to avoid future injuries. The exercise pictures were very helpful. Also great for determining if you need back surgery and what the next steps are, how to find a surgeon, etc. if you do. I read this book as soon as I received it and found all of the information to be a great help and future resource!
