Amazon.com Review Healing Back Pain promises permanent elimination of back pain without drugs, surgery, or exercise. It should have been titled Understanding TMS Pain, because it discusses one particular cause of back pain--Tension Myositis Syndrome (TMS)--and isn't really a program for self-treatment, with only five pages of action plan (and many more pages telling why conventional methods don't work). According to John E. Sarno, M.D., TMS is the major cause of pain in the back, neck, shoulders, buttocks, and limbs--and it is caused not by structural abnormalities but by the mind's effort to repress emotions. He's not saying that your pain is all in your head; rather, he's saying that the battle going on in your mind results in a real physical disorder that may affect muscles, nerves, tendons, or ligaments. An injury may have triggered the disorder, but is not the cause of the amount or intensity of the resulting pain. According to Sarno, the mind tricks you into not facing repressed emotion by making you focus on pain in the body. When this realization sinks in ("and it must sink in, for mere intellectual appreciation of the process is not enough"), the trick doesn't work any more, and there's no need for the pain. (Healing Back Pain should not be used for self-diagnosis. Always consult a physician for chronic or acute back pain.) --Joan Price
Product Description The renowned author of the classic Mind Over Back Pain has written a new guide examining revolutionary treatments to relieve pain without exercise, medication, or physical therapy.

Magic Isn't Logical January 7, 2009 Susan,NYC Friends have been recommending Dr. Sarno's book to me for years but I ignored them because my back was fine. They told me it was an amazing book even if you didn't have back pain. When I hurt my back I hobbled out to get this book and it healed me...instantly! I thought it was miraculous that I didn't have to "do" anything and I was suddenly healed. Dr. Sarno explains the mind body connection in a brilliant and logical way. You've got to read it to believe it. Other books that heal instantaneously are Being Here: Modern Day Tales of Enlightenment, Working on Yourself Doesn't Work: The 3 Simple Ideas That Will Instantaneously Transform Your Life and How to Create a Magical Relationship: The 3 Simple Ideas that Will Instantaneously Transform Your Love Life Dr. Sarno and the Kanes' work are magical and I highly recommend these books.
A MUST READ December 26, 2008 William J. Davenport (Florida) 12/26/08 Great book! Once you understand it and beleive in it, it all comes together.
Life Saver December 23, 2008 M. Cottingham (Minneapolis, MN) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
John Sarno's books freed me of a life of debilitating pain. When I developed excruciating back pain years ago, I took the typical medical route and saw a number of doctors and also had the x-rays and MRI. I was diagnosed with a herniated disc and disc bulges. By the grace of God, I came upon a recommendation in a magazine for Sarno's books on back pain. I saw chiropractors, physical therapists and 2 surgeons who wanted to operate, but I persisted with the books. Slowly my pain subsided and eventually went away completely. When I have an occasional recurrence, I go to the books and journal about the stresses in my life, and I recover from the pain within a few days. I only wish more people, particularly physicians, could OPEN THEIR MINDS to Sarno's diagnosis and treatment of mind/body disorders, particularly back pain. The surgery and drugs being used to treat and perpetuate pain disorders is a crime of modern medicine. Sarno is truly a pioneer in the medical world.
Read before back surgery December 6, 2008 L. Phillips (Oklahoma) This book has healed countless friends and relatives of their back pain. My husband was preparing for back surgery, we bought this book, he read it and he didn't need back surgery any more. I know it is weird but it is true.
Literally A Lifesaver November 23, 2008 Lynn Shirey (Portland, OR) Dr. Sarno's book was literally a lifesaver for me. I had heard about his revolutionary theories on the radio, and was fascinated with the mind-body connection. I don't have any back pain, but read the book applying the same theories to my migraines and frequent heartburn. The results were amazing. Improvement didn't occur overnight or without many, many re-reads of this book. But I credit Dr. Sarno and his theory regarding TMS as minimizing the impact of these chronic conditions in my life. After one year, I experienced probably about a 90% reduction in the occurrence of migraines and 80% reduction in the incidents of heartburn. Dr. Sarno's theories won't work for everyone. But for those open to exploring the mind-body connection, I believe his thought-provoking theory of pain is a revelation and provides an effective way to reduce chronic pain. It definitely worked for me.
