Very informative November 19, 2009 Rosely D. Gonzalez (Long Beach, CA) My therapist recommended this book. Once i started reading it i learned alot about myself and gave me answers and explanations to alot of my wonders. The book was like new. no torns, writing or anything of the like. Very Satisfied!!!
a must for healing October 11, 2009 Social worker (CT) I am using this book with several clients who have been sexually and emotionally abused as children/teenagers, including a male. This book gently introduces the process of healing and allows difficult assignments to be skipped over. Its a well written book for those who think they are ready to start the healing journey. I highly recommend this book.
Makes a great gift!! October 9, 2009 Mr Parallel (Chicago) 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
Send anonymous copies to the impressionable daughters of your boss, your landlord, or the neighbors you can't stand. Include a nice card with a poem by Maya Angelou and an anonymous note reading "I hope this helps you the way it did me." Then sit back and savor the carnage. Good times.
Bible of the 1980's "therapy" Disaster August 30, 2009 Nicholas Watters (Chicago, IL United States) 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
This book is a manual for creating hysteria written by people who have no education or training in what hysteria is (in any sense of the word). I guess the authors can't be faulted for their naive approach--they just did not know any better. What is more amazing is the number of people with advanced degrees who should have known better who fell for the recovered memory malarkey, including psychologists, psychiatrists, and clinical social workers. Many of them lost their licenses and were sued, as they should have been. The Rush "Dissociative Disorders" clinic in Chicago, affiliated with a reputable hospital, had to be shut down. This book is of that dismal period and is not helpful. The reason that the 80's fad ended was not only that it progressed from recovered memories to multiple personalities, to Satanic ritual abuse, to massive conspiracies with law enforcement, but also that it made people worse. High functioning people with mild depression or anxiety were turned into unemployable wrecks and were badgered into breaking up their families.
Unlike the authors, I do have clinical training, and I have had to clean up after some of these therapists. Some of their former patients are just preoccupied with piecing together imaginary scenarios and finding sinister explanations for banal experiences. Generally, they are too disabled to function in the family or the community. And those are the lucky ones.
Call be a dupe or a Satanist conspirator, but if you want an expert in memory, it's Elizabeth Loftus. I have seen plenty of women and men who were sexually abused, and they didn't come to see me because they had any trouble remembering it.
Life saver August 26, 2009 Julie This book saved my life. And I will be forever grateful to the two authors for writing this wonderful book.
I was a depressed and suicidal teenager and never knew what was wrong with me. In my early twens I had a flashback of repressed memory and fianlly realised what the problem was. Found that book in a library and for the first time in my life felt understood and realised I was not alone. Spend days reading it, high lighting what I was experiencing also. Started therapy for long years and am now, 15 years later, a strong, healthy and happy survivor. Without the book, I would have probably taken my own life as I was ready to do so back then.
