4 out of 5 stars Effective and informative   March 8, 2010

I thought this book was very helpful. I was diagnosed with insulin resistance about 2 months ago and have since been sent into a whirlwind of what I can't eat, what I should eat, and how many times I should eat in a day. I have seen a nutritionist who helped me out with the basics, and I got this book as a supplement. It is mostly spot-on with what my dietician told me except that the book counts milk and yogurt as a protein while my dietician counts it as a carb. The book provides a lot of educational information about what insulin resistance is and what is best to counteract its effects. It also provides some recipes and food examples to help out beginners with meal plans.

I think the book is great for those with this medical issue. It is definitely geared towards a lifelong committment to battling insulin resistance rather than a temporary solution to weight-loss. Some of the information contained in the book might be too technical for someone just sifting through, but it is incredibly handy for someone who wants to know everything about their condition to better combat the symptoms. In the past 2 months, following this diet and exercising 3 times a week has resulted in 20 pounds lost effortlessly, and I'm nowhere near done yet. It's so great to have finally decoded the correct way to lose weight and be healthy!

5 out of 5 stars The easiest and most effective weight loss guidelines I've ever encountered!   February 7, 2010

Reading this book has led me to a breakthrough in my own lifelong struggle with weight management. As many other plus-sized women may know, it can be aggravating when doctors tell you, "Just lose the weight," as if it were as easy as taking out the garbage. Like many others here, I have tried every diet under the sun. I've lived through cycle after cycle of self-loathing and deprivation. At 235 lbs., I found myself working out at the gym four times a week while my skinny friends drank endless bottles of beer and ate cheeseburgers without gaining more than a tiny bit of a soft belly. If I indulged in fast food one night, I could expect to be 2-3 lbs. heavier the next day. I feared that I had a thyroid problem or PCOS. Tests showed I had neither, which added to my perplexity. I constantly wondered, "Why me?" when I was being so good.

Reading this book has helped me pinpoint some of the crucial mistakes I was making in my eating habits. I thought I was eating for success as I faithfully baked my chicken, steamed my rice and veggies, drank lots of water, drank low-fat milk, rarely drank sodas... which made me even angrier about being overweight because I kept thinking, "I'm not eating McDonald's and cake every day, why does my body make me look like I do?" The Insulin-Resistance Diet has educated me on how to balance the different components of my food to do the most work for my body. That's what all questions pertaining to healthy eating should boil down to: How is this food working for your body?

But if you don't have diabetes or PCOS, you're probably looking at this book in hopes of simply finding a better way to lose weight. I feel as though I've found the best. I was able to drop 18 lbs. in 2.5 months, which has NEVER happened to me before on any other diet or exercise program. I lost weight fairly quickly and felt like I was "cheating" MANY times while following the book's guidelines. Once you familiarize yourself with the "linking & balancing," you'll most likely find that you could happily eat this way for the rest of your life.

I got pregnant before I could complete my weight loss goal (reaching 150 lbs.), but I am confident I can get there someday--without all the suffering and selt-hatred, thanks to this book!

I bought this book, let my sister borrow it, and then bought one for her so we both could refer to it.

I was very interested in this book being that I've been diagnosed with polycystic ovarys for many years, causing insulance resistance that presents itself as diabetes type II. I've not gotten to read it yet, since my husband grabbed it and is almost done reading it. He thought that the premise was a good one, found in other diet books, yet put in a simplified way for the common person to understand. I am looking forward to my turn at reading it.
