A Wake Up Call July 18, 2009 emilythebunny (Northern Virginia) This author starts the book with a very compelling example of a rather young woman with heart disease caused by stress. I said stress. Not poor diet. Not lack of exercise. But stress.
This author explains that stress can slowly destroy your body. She has come up with a scale to help determine how stressed your body is. Then, she tells you what you should and should NOT do based on how badly your body is run down. For example, if you are extremely run down, you are not supposed to be doing vigorous exercise as it would do more harm than good.
I thought that her guidelines for recovery were pretty straightforward to follow and have forced me to evaluate my activities and eliminate the extraneous ones so that I have enough time to sleep and prepare healthy meals.
I have read hundreds of health books over the years, and this is the first book that actually explained in detail what stress does to your adrenal glands, how to determine how run down your body is, and simple steps to take to help your body recover.
Take with a grain of salt February 25, 2009 kt1 I picked-up this book after experiencing what I can only describe as burnout over a period of a few months. A painful burnout at times.
Thankfully, before I started too much self-diagnosing, I found myself at a doctor who refused to settle at "You're young. You're healthy. There is nothing wrong with you." Instead he thought to run a couple of iron studies and sure enough, my iron saturation levels were through the roof. Turns out I have Hereditary Hemochromatosis (HHC). If I hadn't been properly diagnosed and subsequently treated, this condition would almost certainly have led to organ damage and quite possibly contributed to death by means of pancreatic cancer, liver failure, etc.
Read the book. Trust the book. But also make certain you seek the care of a professional if you 'know' there is something wrong.
Dramatically Helped Me Heal November 18, 2007 Dr Lisa Love (Encinitas, CA United States) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
Four years ago after a decade of chronic stress I found myself feeling so exhausted I could barely get out of bed. A naturopathic doctor friend of mine told me that I was suffering from adrenal fatigue and recommended that I get this book. The book outlined different stages of adrenal fatigue and included tests to help you diagnose how severe your condition was. I was quickly heading from the third to the fourth stage of adrenal collapse, which helped me realize that I had better take my condition very seriously.
My solution? I followed the recommendations in this book almost to the letter. I was especially surprised to discover that what I needed most (on top of a diet change) was REST, REST, and MORE REST! It also helped me understand why exercise at the stage of adrenal burnout I was suffering from was NOT helpful! Imagine that! I had been an exercise buff, so that is the last thing I would have thought to do, cut back on my workout regime. But, just as the book described working out was actually making me more exhausted instead of giving me the usual high.
Later, as I repaired my health and moved back into stages two and then one, I picked up my regime of working out again as also recommended in this book. If you find yourself tired all the time, please do yourself a favor. BUY THIS BOOK and get informed! Get help! Learn about the different levels of adrenal burnout and follow the excellent advice given here. Now, whenever I find myself starting to get tired (levels one and maybe even heading into two), I pick up the book and follow the advice again. The end result is that I know not to let myself slip into such disrepair. I respect my body now and its needs. This book will teach you how to respect yours! - Dr. Lisa Love, Beyond the Secret
This book changed my life. July 15, 2007 S. Ellis (USA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I know lots of people say that about things, that they change their lives, and it sounds hokey. In this case, however, it's true. I have been taking medication for my always borderline high blood pressure for the last 5 or 6 years and, for the past year or so, feeling exhausted all of the time. Not to mention a host of other symptoms that go along with the "Hitting the Wall" state as Dr. Hanley calls it. In 2 weeks of following her suggestions, which include diet changes (One of her instructions is "Eat, eat, eat, all day long."), relaxation, rest and a number of other things, my blood pressure is low enough that my doctor took me off of my medication. I couldn't believe it! I also have more energy and am sleeping better. I would recommend this book to anyone who's feeling exhausted or burnt out.
What a Relief January 10, 2007 Julia Kelly (Cincinnati, Ohio) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
to finally find someone who understands how exhuasted and stressed out I've become. For years the doctors have said I'm fine, probably depressed. BUT I WASN'T - I have been genuinely tired and this book finally showed me the reason. I would highly recommend it to anyone who is having trouble getting the right diagnosis. It has invaluable advice and recommendations in it.
