Product Description
The national C-section rate is at an all-time high of 31 percent. Are all these C-sections necessary, or are some of them done simply for the sake of convenience? Inductions seem to be the norm, but are they always needed? Today, expectant mothers are often left feeling powerless, as their instincts are replaced by drugs and routine medical procedures.

What you are about to discover is that you have a choice, and you have the power to plan the kind of birth that's right for you-whether it is at a birth center, a hospital, or at home. In YOUR BEST BIRTH, internationally known advocates of informed choice RickiLake and Abby Epstein inspire women to take back the birth experience, with essential advice on:
· Positive and negative effects of epidurals, Pitocin, and other drugs and interventions
· Inducing vs. allowing your labor to progress naturally
· The truth behind our country's staggering C-section rate
· Assembling your birth team and creating your birth plan.

With chapters such as "Obstetricians: Finding Dr. Right,""Epidurals: You Haven't Got Time for the Pain," and "Electronic Monitors: Reading between the Lines,"Lake and Epstein will encourage you to consider whatever your doctor, mother, and best friend may suggest in a new light. The book also includes inspiring birth stories, including those from well-known personalities, such as Laila Ali and Cindy Crawford. Packed with crucial advice from childbirth professionals, and delivered in a down-to-earth, engaging voice, YOUR BEST BIRTH is sure to renew your confidence and put the control back where it belongs: with parents-to-be!

"Abby Epstein and Ricki Lake have taken a wonderful and constructive approach to ensuring an optimal birthing experience. Their language creates a 'climate of confidence' for pregnant women and their families, who must make key decisions about where, how and with whom to give birth in a health care system often unresponsive to our needs. This book is like a good friend giving wise counsel." --Judy Norsigian, co-editor of Our Bodies, Ourselves: Pregnancy and Birth and Executive Director, Our Bodies Ourselves

4 out of 5 stars Good information   October 21, 2009
Chelsey Andrews (Oregon)
I've read many pregnancy books, and this one is one of my favorites. It is a little negative on the hospital birth experience (but many books are negative on the whole mid-wife birthing experience as well), but I believe it has some very valuable information and I loved reading the little read life stories.
If you would like some more information on midwifery, then check out this book.

5 out of 5 stars A Must read for anyone thinking of having a baby, trying or already pregnant!   October 16, 2009
Nichole F. Boden (Ames, IA USA)
A very unbiased view of childbirth. Basically letting you know that you have options, they are out there, and that you are in control of your birth and you shouldn't feel bad about how your birth goes as long as you have in your mind what you want, what you are willing to let happen and not happen, and you are open-minded you can have a great birth experience regardless. Great stories of birth from real moms with all different birthing situations and how it changed them. A must read.

2 out of 5 stars Very Biased   September 12, 2009

I watched The Business of Being Born before buying this book and hoped that this book would do as it claimed, fill in the gaps left by the film. All it really did was demonize hospital births and elevate women who give birth at home with a midwife and no drugs to "goddess" status. Phlllbbbttt!!! As much as they keep saying, "We're not saying that the only way to have a great birth is to do it at home with a midwife and no drugs," everything in the book belies that. It would have been ok if they had just owned that perspective, but to keep trying to claim objectivity and a lack of bias is total BS.

The book did manage to accomplish one goal, which was to prompt me to do more research, if for no other reason than to fact check some of the statements and statistics about hospital births.

Oh, and if it's not being hatched from an egg or pulled from a vat of goo in some mad scientist's lab, IT IS NATURAL CHILDBIRTH, drugs, c-section, or not.

5 out of 5 stars A Thorough Go-To Guide For Birth   August 17, 2009

I loved this book. It contains so much vital information for helping parents decide the best place and the best way to give birth. I especially loved all the lists of questions to use in various situations such as potential hospitals, birth centers, midwives, etc. These are important questions to ask in helping a woman decide what's best for her birth. The book is useful, and I have tons of pages tabbed and highlighted. I highly recommend getting this book.

I bought it before I became pregnant, and then I started reading it. Unfortunately I miscarried. However, this gave me the chance to read the book before getting pregnant again. It's helped me organize my plan, and decide the best plan of action for my family without the pressure of the 9-month time clock. So, I highly recommend reading this before getting pregnant if possible.

5 out of 5 stars If you read one thing when you are pregnant, this should be it!!!   August 11, 2009

I love this book! It reads like a talk with your girlfriends and is so truthful. Don't pass it by thinking that it is "too crunchy", give it a try! I promise you won't be disappointed!! One out of three women end up having c-sections in our country!!! Who wants to start motherhood recovering from major abdominal surgery? This book will give you the tools to make the best decision for you and your family so you can have the best start as a mom!!!
