Product Description
Studies show that the reason why many people gain weight—and keep it on—is emotional eating, not physical eating. Now Dr. Roger Gould, a psychotherapist and a leading authority on emotional eating, shows how to overcome fear, anxiety, and other stresses and stop using food as an over-the-counter tranquilizer that can cause weight gain. With 12 practical ways to stop emotional eating and an eight-session program, Dr. Gould helps you become your own eating therapist and shrink yourself for good.

5 out of 5 stars real therapy   November 18, 2009
yoyomommy (des moines)
Actual therapy getting to the bare roots of what causes emotional overeating, not ridiculous 'diet' tips like drink water or use small plates, but real headshrinking therapy. And it's good too, the kind of connections in your mind that need to be made before changes can happen in your behavior. I've been to therapists before and they were expensive and not even close to being as good as the kind of help you receive in Shrink Yourself. He takes you down to the parts of your mind that rule how you behave and show you what's going on and why. Interesting reading even if you didn't have an eating disorder, but for someone like me who has a severe emotional eating disorder, the book gives me great relief and hope. I only knew Geneen Roth as the author who tackles this problem, and she does it so well, but even after I read her books I still had a problem, I feel like I could actually be cured with this book; it is written clearly and kindly and he has a website too which is helpful to continue on with your 'therapy'. I'm very very glad I stumbled upon it, he is brilliant and shares all his insight with you to help you live a much happier and unobsessed life.

5 out of 5 stars Practical and Powerful   November 12, 2009
LMS (WI United States)
I never struggled with my weight as a child or a teenager. I was at my ideal weight until I finished high school. But it was in college that my struggles with emotional eating really began. I experienced several traumatic events during my college years, and didn't know how to cope. So I turned to food to for comfort. It was pretty firmly entrenched by the time I graduated from college in 2001 at the age of 24. Now, at the age of 33, my emotional eating is completely out of control. I recently realized that I would never be able to stick to a diet and lose weight unless I got my emotional eating under control. But I had no idea how to do that. That's why I'm so thankful that I found this book. I didn't know where to turn, so I did a search on this site on emotional eating. I read the previous reviews, and thought I would give this a try. I have to admit, I was somewhat skeptical that this could really help. But I thought I would give it a try anyway.

If you struggle with emotional eating, do yourself a favor. Buy a copy of this book. The first part of the book is designed to help you determine if you are an emotional eating and understand how it might manifest. The second part of the book is where the rubber meets the road. The second part of the book is all about understanding why you became an emotional eater, the feelings you are trying to stuff, and gives sensible advice and exercises that help you break the pattern once and for all. But it is not enough to just read the book. To achieve lasting change, you have to do the exercises. Reading this book was often painful. There is so much food for thought that this book provides. There are no quick fixes or shortcuts here. I would definitely recommend reading this book with a highlighter in your hand. There is much you will want to highlight here. This has helped me look at my emotional eating in a completely new light and to realize that it is not impossible to overcome. Change in possible. I know that this is a book I will refer to again in the future.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who struggles with emotional eating.

5 out of 5 stars Great book and great program   October 25, 2009
Andy95 (CA)
I have read the book and am now working on the online program ($120). I highly recommend them. I have had mixed success over the years losing weight but even when my weight was down, I still had bad eating habits. I was simply looking for some techniques to improve my eating habits but these programs went much deeper. The programs are not easy, but they really force you to look into yourself and give you powerful tools to improve your approach to food (and your whole life).
My one minor suggestion for improvement would be to include more examples for guys. The examples in the book and online program seem a bit more focused for gals though it was easy to see an example more applicable for myself.
Definitely worth the money!

5 out of 5 stars Mind travel in conquering over-eating   September 16, 2009

Superb book ....certainly helps you realize how
often we mindlessly eat and gives you an awareness
of the unconscious reasons behind binges.
Some tough questions to answer ...but makes you
face life as an adult.
