Great kit, but you don't need all of it. August 27, 2009 Marcus Sensei (Japan) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This kit is excellent, however, you'll probably find you don't need all of it. The A+ Complete Study Guide is an excellent book. I've got a lot of experience with pc repair and troubleshooting, but I still learned some things I didn't know. A problem I have with the Complete is that some sections of the book are repeated word for word later on while other parts of the book tell you to refer to other chapters. If you do use the book, read the whole book before you take the essentials exam. The book suggests you read chapters 1-11 for the essentials and 12-6 afterwards for the later exams. I followed that and passed the essentials, however, while reading the later chapters, I found information that would have helped me with a few questions on the essentials.
Onto the next book, the A+ Fast Pass is simply a condensed version of the Complete Study Guide. There is very little reason to read it if you've already read the Complete SG. I will say that some of the material in the Fast Pass is not in the Complete, however, I was never tested on it.
The last book, the PC Technician's street guide is probably only useful for people who don't have much experience actually building or troubleshooting PCs.
So overall, I only really needed the Complete Study Guide.
Lastly, the 2006 (labeled 2007 exam by some testing proctors) will be retired next July. The 2009 test is already available. Be careful when you buy this book, if you want to take the 2006 version and can take both test before the retirement date, I'd say buy it! If you want the 2009 test or can't finish the exams by the retirement date, don't.
DO NOT BUY. March 11, 2009 Oliver K. Nguyen 0 out of 7 found this review helpful
I am surprised by the amount of positive reviews this book has received. In fact I have a hunch that the publisher may have payed people to write them...
I say this because this book is downright terrible. Sure the book is clean and cool, but the book offers nothing else except EXTREMELY lousy explanations and descriptions. It is written more as a reference than a introductory guide.
Imagine teaching calculus to someone who hasn't even learned precalc/trig or algebra. My feeling was very similar. In the beginning chapters, the authors would use terms that were not explained leaving me absolutely confused and frustrated.
The only thing this book offered me was the table of contents. Since the rest of the book was of no use to me, I studied all the material on wikipedia following the order listed on the table of contents.
Also if you are looking for another alternative, I would recommend Mike Meyers A+ All in one Study Guide. I would advise any buyers to go to a local bookstore and look at these books before buying, because the reviews on amazon can be very misleading.
I passed using these books. March 2, 2009 J. Cordero 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Ok so let me start with saying that Sybex books are great for studying. I say this because i had bought Mike Meyers A+ books.. but i didn't feel like i learned much. This books is clear cut and tells you what you need to know about the test. Ok so in this certain case, i bought this package that contains 3 books. But i only used the actual study guide. So i suggest that if you know your way with computers you really don't need all three books, just the study guide. NOW if your a newbie then these books will be more beneficial for you. I passed both my tests and now i am A+ certified. Now within the book it will give you a chart of chapters you must read before taking the certain test. Well i say read the WHOLE book before you take any exam. Trust me. anyhow hope you all do good and pass your test. :-)
Great Tool for Preparing Yourself! February 14, 2009 Jonathan West (Hailey, Idaho USA) I bought this set because of the extra textbooks it came with are designed to help you prepare for real-world scenarios. I've used multiple A+ books over the years and I have noticed that they all seem to have small mistakes or typos. This is by far, the best I've seen with that in mind. Plenty of diagrams show you what it is you are reading about. I would recommend this to anyone looking to get A+ Certified.
Very good set January 29, 2009 Smart Clicks (WI) 4 out of 5 alot of things are recovered over and over but other than that a very good set. I will reread all of these books in the future
