Amazon.com Review Health can be defined in any number of ways, from the simple fact that you're not lying on a hospital bed to an overall sense of well-being and connectedness. One person may not feel healthy unless he's carrying around mounds of gym-built muscle, while another doesn't feel healthy unless she's eating an intestine-scrubbing macrobiotic diet and practicing an hour of yoga each day. Dr. Andrew Weil looks at every aspect of health in Natural Health, Natural Medicine. He's quite cynical about bodybuilding and the emphasis on protein in our diets, while making a strong case for paying more attention to the way we breathe and the degree to which we interact with family, community, and nature. An interesting--but, unfortunately, short--section on loving says that most people have no idea what to do when they fall out of romantic love with a partner, which helps explain the high divorce rate. Other sections of the book focus on healthy self-care practices ("nasal douching" is recommended for sinus sufferers), supplements (he believes most benefits that seem to come from these are placebo responses), and natural home remedies for an A-to-Z list of problems (the section on depression states that people experience low mood because they constantly seek highs; eliminate the quest for highs, and you eliminate the rebound experience of lows). Many regard this book as the bible of natural healing; but even those who are on the fence about alternative medicine should find it to be an entertaining, informative, and highly opinionated beginner's guide to achieving better health without conventional medicine. --Lou Schuler

thank heavens I read this book October 9, 2009 Bev (Connecticut) I was on a very popular diet suggested to me by my doctor. I was in the first (low carb) part of the diet and I was becoming very weak and tired and sick. I went on the second part of the diet and I still felt bad. I read this book and I realized that I was still eating far too much protein. I immmediately switched to Dr. Weil's suggestion that most of the diet should be low to medium glycemic carbs and 4 oz. of protein per day(among other foods)and I perked up and actually ate less food and enjoyed it so much more. This Dr. is so loving and moderate. He may have prevented a bad outcome with me.Please be careful with low carb diets people-I was so sick. This book is a treasure and I want to eventually get more of this wonderful man's books.
Healthy Holisitc Lifestyle Choice September 18, 2009 Bavarian Beauty This book provides a wealth of great advice about how to live healthy holistic lifestyle.
My husband and I made many changes for the better based on what we learned here.
There is alot of common sense, and if more people would follow Dr. Weil's advice, we could lower health costs dramatically in America & around the world!
Practical Guide to Health September 15, 2009 V. Dalfino This book is practical, it isn't overly critical and it practical for Americans to follow, while keeping all of the key points to good health in it. It supports some harmful conventional drugs in small areas such as Acne, which he supports accutane, but hey you can't kill them all, especially coming for an M.D rather than Holistic Practitioner. Great Book.
A great health guide. Informative and practical August 17, 2008 Lee C. Soot, RN (Singapore) I was very impressed by the chapter about physical activities and related effects on health in general.
The author explains in a systematic manner the positive and negative types of physical exercise and training.
I have tremendously enjoyed the therapeutic techniques included in this book, especially those that improve the quality of our health.
As a matter of fact, I began to use some of these techniques, and already I feel much better.
A superb book, and a great health guide.
Excellent and Thorough July 31, 2008 L. Odom (Florida) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is the most complete book I've seen on the subject of natural medicines. It is comprehensive and extremely well written. I haven't been able to put it down and found myself studying it. I have learned so much it may bring me out of the natural medicine novice category. Natural Health, Natural Medicine: The Complete Guide to Wellness and Self-Care for Optimum Health
