5 out of 5 stars Great Recipes   November 6, 2009
somethingsweet
I had not planned to be mom who made her own baby food (it seemed like a big hassle and I thought I was too busy!) but after my son's pediatrician made it sound easy, I did a little research and bought this book. I used it until my son was a little over a year old and he was mostly able to eat the table food that we were eating, and I have to say that I was very pleased with it.

Pros:
1. I made a lot of the recipes in this book, and they were all actually really tasty. My son loved everything from liver to vegetables. He was always excited to try new foods, because they were always good.
2. Every recipe notes whether it is suitable for freezing or not. If it is, you can make a big batch, slop it over an ice-cube tray, and freeze, then store the cubes in serving sizes in the freezer.
3. Many of the recipes have beautiful pictures next to them of the recipe - this may not matter to you, but it was really motivating for me to make a lot of recipes, because it all looked so appetizing.
4. Lots of great ideas for food combinations to try that I wouldn't have thought of.
5. Index in the back of the book where you can look up recipes by ingredient.

Cons:
1. Some other people have noted this as well - the author is British, and they must have different recommended ages for starting infants on some foods. Specifically, she has recipes using fish and cow's milk starting at 8 months, and the guidelines in the U.S. have you start those foods at 1 year. So just be aware of that.
2. Many of the meat recipes call for chicken stock that you make from scratch yourself. I used the sodium-free chicken stock powder, and it made those recipes much, much easier. Wyler makes it, and they use potassium instead of sodium.

5 out of 5 stars Even my 8 year old likes "baby purees"   October 19, 2009

I love this cookbook. With my third and last baby, I wanted to make my own baby food. I didn't have any idea where to begin, so I purchased this book. The recipes are delicious. My 8 year old asks to try all of the purees now....they're that good. The recipes are suprisingly flavorful. My husband and I ate about half of the beef stew before I pureed it, and I'm a salt fiend. I purchase this book all the time now and give it as a baby shower gifts.

4 out of 5 stars Really great recipes, no nutritional info!   October 12, 2009

Loved the recipes, good ideas. There were a few recipes repeated in it. My complaint is that there is no nutritional data for the recipes. My son is on a special diet and I need to know caloric info, etc., and it isn't listed. Otherwise, great book!

1 out of 5 stars Takes too much time, and it's not worth it!!!   October 9, 2009

I bought 3 of Annabel's books before my son was born, because I was going to be a "super-mommy" who NEVER fed my child canned or jarred baby foods, and he was only going to eat fresh foods so he could be sooooo very healthy. Anyway, flash forward 18 months, and I have finally started to make some of her recipes. This is so ridiculous! First of all, if you're a working mother - forget about it. I'm fortunate enough to stay home with my son, and have been since he was born, and I still don't have the time needed to mess with this. You are essentially preparing 2 meals if you want to eat anything yourself. The food is tasteful enough for a toddler, but much too bland for adults. The recipes are also incomplete at times. For example, there is a chicken and corn fritter recipe that lists 1 large onion peeled, and then you are to sautee it in olive oil. That's it. It doesn't instruct you to dice, slice, or quarter the onion, and then there's no instruction as to what to do with it! These recipes call for a lot of fresh ingredients, which I'm a fan of, but seriously, I don't want to run to the store every couple of days with my son in tow - so you have to make a lot of things ahead of time and freeze it. This would be fine if I had the time to do it. My son is at the age where he doesn't stay entertained on his own for very long, so I have to play a lot. I don't have time to cook. Finally, there is a section for "picky eaters" which is exactly what my son is. It is his absolute refusal to eat anything but grapes, chicken nuggets, french fries and rice that has led me to try these recipes - finally - and he took one bite of one of the recipes and immediately spit it out and threw it on the floor. All that time and effort immediately wasted!! Maybe my son is one in a million who will refuse these foods, but I don't think so. To sum up, these books just are not worth it.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Book   October 4, 2009
New Mom
This is an awesome book - don't think about it anymore - just get it!!! Wish more cookbooks were laid out the same way. Very easy to follow recipes and not over complicated. Even if you never make a recipe in this book, it would serve as a great guide on what to feed your baby at different ages/stages and how to introduce solids, etc. Also, the beginning provides a great overview on baby nutrition in general and healthy eating habbits. Stop reading reviews, just purchase already, you won't be dissapointed!
