Must have for your ruck sac November 12, 2009 OnTheBeat (Lima, Peru) As an International teacher I was lucky enough to be hired on to a school in the Peruvian Andes at 9000'. It's a wonderland for the hiker/camper up here. I know from my days on SOCOM (Army) small teams from well over twenty years ago that you never go into the field without your survival manual; you never know what can happen and what you'll need to know. As the Army Field Manual was not able to be ship`ped here, I chose Davenport's "Wilderness Survival Guide" only because of it's previous reviews.
Glad I did! Excellent book covering the essentials in health, personal protection, water, substance and securing food, hot weather, cold weather, shelter, signaling and the other essentials. A man - the author - obviously well informed. His book covers as deeply the survival field manual I used to carry into the field when in at Fort Bragg. Highly recommended - and don't forget to pack it in your ruck every time!
Ok book, a little old or outdated on the info but May 31, 2009 Mountain Man 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
can you ever really be outdated on suvival skills. The basics are the basics and this does cover most of those but not much more.
Explains All April 27, 2009 B. Miller (Omaha, NE) I've had this product for a couple of weeks. Read it all through and through. The illustrations are easy to comprehend. The way it is written is also simple and detailed. For anynone that is looking for the perfect book in wilderness survival this is it. It would have been nice though to get just a little more of a preview of each section before I purchased it just so I know what I was getting myself into. This is my third survival book that I've gotten off of Amazon.com and this is the only one that is as detailed and thorough on wilderness survival. In the book I like the fact that the author gives you man-made solutions and mother nature solutions. Overall I was pleased with my purchase. I would also check out the Encyclopedia of Wild Edible Plants of North America, I haven't received it yet but from the preview it seems like a thorough book.
good book March 17, 2009 Borden (AL USA) This is my second survival book, I started with "US Army Survival Manual: FM 21-76," and I find Wildrness Survival to be an easier read and more informative. This book has a generalized section on edible plants that is practical. There are chapters on shelters, water purification, signaling, first aid, trapping, fire starting, and several other topics.
The only complaint I can make is concerning the chapter on trapping. It was a bit combersome to read as the referenced illustartions typically fall on pages that arent readily viewable while reading the discription.
Although I dont have a library of survival manuals to compare, I recommend "Wilderness Survival" as an educational and entertaining survival manual.
excellent March 7, 2009 bob (Boston, MA United States) excellent book, has lots of stuff I hadn't read anywhere else. Very useful advice and presented in a very logical way. He doesn't just say things and expect you to believe him, he explains 'why'.
