How our tastebuds can kill us February 6, 2010 Animal Lover (NC) While this book is quite technological & scientific in it's approach to the problem of how msg, aspartame, cysteine, hydrolized protein & aspartic acid literally rattle & stimulate the neurons in our brains to death, the lesson here is to read it anyway. While much of the scientific information was way over my head, bottom line is that in just reading & mucking through it, I was amazed at what I learned about how the food industry is KILLING us! The more I read books like this, I'm convinced of this fact. When it comes to ALL the food choices we are given on a daily basis, LET THE BUYER BEWARE!!!! THIS is why there's more movement to organic foods, vegetarian & vegan diets, exercise, simpler lifestyles, less abuse of drugs & alcohol & tobacco, less consumption of sugar & caffeine.....all in the name of better health. Excitotoxins is one more missing piece to the puzzle of life and what NOT to do to survive it, well.
Let the Truth Be Known January 11, 2010 Clayton Williams 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
As someone who finds themselves undergoing an allergic reaction to MSG and other taste enhancers/preservatives of which I do not even know all of the aliases for, I thought that I would match my symptoms with the information in this book. When I eat MSG, or any of its sibling chemicals, my memory virtually goes blank for two days, and I break out in sweats. I mimic a Parkinson's patient perfectly during this time. Some may find themselves more sensitive to this chemical than others - though the awareness that it is in literally every boxed or canned food product and restaurant in the country will add great quality to your life. For that, Dr. Blaylock's valiant efforts are not in vain. In the introduction, the commentator speaks of America's students' test scores and draws a parallel between their results and these excitotoxins in all of their diets. The link cannot be denied. I am the last person to seek emotional appeals in the name of anti-industry, or anything of the sort - but I have first hand experience of the dangers MSG and its counterparts present to the human body. There are plenty of studies in this book verifying the apoptotic nature of MSG that will have you questioning how many studies really need to be done before a class action lawsuit is presented against the makers of these ingredients. Dr. Blaylock has made clear that the evidence is in, and apparently the only thing holding back the above is our platonic notion of truth that allegedly corrupts anyone of making a valid scientific thesis nowadays. Get the book, and read the proof. If you are in a field that requires the use of your mind, you owe it to yourself to preserve it at all costs.
Review of Excitotoxins December 14, 2009 Kristian J. Fischer This book contains some good and interesting information for those who are proponents of the idea some people can be seriously affected by substances in the food we eat. Although I found the book to be very well written, it is a bit academic and not what I would call an easy read. I would suggest that this book is for those interested enough in the subject to delve deeply into the science behind this theory.
