Product Description In this original and unabridged reissue of Childbirth without Fear, Grantly Dick-Read, the obstetrician who gave birth to the natural childbirth movement, unpicks every possible root cause of western woman's fear and anxiety in pregnancy, childbirth and breastfeeding and does so with overwhelming heart and empathy. In an age where birth has often been overtaken by obstetrics, Dr Dick-Read's philosophy is still as fresh as it was when he originally wrote this book. Essential reading for all mothers-to-be! With a new foreword by Michel Odent.

Good for any soon to be mother! March 5, 2010 seven girl I'm having my first child in July and we're having a home birth.
This book was recommended by some friends so I bought it.
It really gets to the heart of the matter on where fear of childbirth comes from and how we can deal with it and why why should not be afraid of a normal, event of life. Whether you are having a hospital birth or a home birth, I HIGHLY recommend reading this book.
As women, we've grown up learning that childbirth is dangerous, horrible, painful and stressful and something that we dread looking ahead to...when we should really be anticipating this day with excitment without fear.
The writer is from the early 1900's so the language is a bit different then we're used to in modern times here, but just focus and stick with it and it will be of great value. I'm very glad I purcased it.
childbirth without fear February 1, 2010 J McG (goldcoast australia) This book explains the main principles involved in giving birth. It is both inspirirng and educational a great must read for anyone giving birth for the first time
A MUST FOR ANY WOMAN WHO IS AFRAID OF CHILDBIRTH October 19, 2009 Lara F What a revolution! This book is a essential for ANY woman who has ANY fear about childbirth! It is a practical, scientific and holistic approach to dealing with the creation of pain through fear.
In a world, where Dr's are promoting un-natural childbirth for convinience and 'safety' sake, and woman are becoming more disempowered through their pregnancys, this book is a must-read!
awesome book May 25, 2009 Hannah Hickman The idea of this book is great, however it is a bit of a tuff read. I would still recommend it though because I truly believe in the idea of having a childbirth without fear.
So glad I read this book May 6, 2009 Hanna C. Roark (North Louisiana) This book was a priceless find. I love how it gets into the mechanics of labor. It also explains how important the mental part of labor is as well. He explains how fear is the enemy to a normal labor. Fear causes tension and tension causes pain. He goes on to explain how a woman can give birth fearlessly and with minimal to no pain.
The reason I gave this book 4 stars instead of 5 is because it is a hard read. I put it down after a few chapters because of some of the big words I didn't understand. However, I decided to force myself to finish it and I'm so glad I did. Chapters 4-10 were the most beneficial to me.
Another reason I gave it 4 stars is that the book is outdated as far as what happens medically in the hospital now versus then. For example: the pain medicine of choice then was gas, chloroform, etc. We don't see that in obstetrics anymore since the epidural is the new replacement.
Overall, this is a must read. Another great book to read is "The Christian Childbirth Handbook" by Jennifer Vanderlaan. She quotes from Dick-Read's book often in more of "laymen's terms."
