Product Description Life seemed idyllic for thirty-two-year-old Liz Holzemer. Wife of Major League Baseball pitcher Mark Holzemer, Liz was enjoying a successful career as a journalist when an MRI revealed a baseball-size brain tumor she soon found out was called meningioma. Told with clarity and unwavering humor, this book is an inspirational and informative account of one woman’s battle for her life. It shows how she emerged from this frightening diagnosis and two brain surgeries retaining her remarkable spirit of survival and renewed sense of purpose and hope. With practical information about meningioma and brain surgery, Curveball is a manual for people who face life-altering challenges and is also proof that one need not fight such battles alone.

Liz hits a home run! November 20, 2009 Lynnie (Florida) It's been one year since my craniotomy to remove a 2cm meningioma that enabled spinal fluid to leak into my middle ear canal. I wish I'd read this book and found the web site ([...]) BEFORE my sugery: it's a home run! A must-read for anyone who's been diagnosed with a brain tumor. Family members and friends should read it, too. Liz doesn't sugar-coat the truth or frighten her readers with melodrama; she strikes a realistic balance. Granted, things ended happily for her, although she still takes anti-seizure medication which causes fatigue, and she lives with chronic pain. Some of us didn't recover as well as Liz did, but that doesn't detract from her inspirational message.
As a meningioma survivor September 22, 2009 K. Christensen (Dayton, Ohio USA) I guess I am in disagreement with most of my fellow sufferers, but, you know, life doesnt turn out as well as it did for her, for all of us...I keep hearing all these great stories about people who get on with their lives and look beautiful again--some are inoperable. Most of us are not married to professional athletes. And many of us never return to careers , nor have children.
I would just like others to know that everyone out there with a meningioma does not have a fairytale ending--especially those without insurance. Of course, I am not dead yet (lol) so who knows. But I keep hearing from doctors, support gorup members, etc, that this is the "best brain tumor you can have"--how about none at all. Maybe I am too recently diagnosed....
Curveball: When Life Throws You A Brain Tumor May 7, 2009 Brenda Kleinsasser As a Meningioma survivor myself, I found this book to be the best handbook for a person with this type of brain tumor. There is just not enough awareness out there for this primary brain tumor. Liz handles this book with grace and determination to get on with her life.
She truly made her experience into something wonderful and positive. I would be giving away the plot, if I told you.
Truly, a great read for anyone who has been diagnosed with a Meningioma. This is a great month to get this book, as this is National Brain Tumor Awareness Month.
This is a must read!!!!!
Couldnt have said it any better! March 16, 2009 CM As a Meningioma survivor myself, Liz says it all, her experience was different but how she felt wasnt and I found her story to be very comforting in knowing that I am not alone in this. Highly recommend this for anyone who has had a brain tumour or brain surgery and their family.
Fabulous book June 8, 2008 Sophie D (Auckland, New Zealand) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
As the daughter of someone with a meningioma I found this book fantastic. In fact, I literally didnt put it down - I read it from cover to cover in one go. And then I passed it onto another family member, who read it and passed it on again. We have now all read it and have since enjoyed discussing it with each other. There were many snippets that Liz shared that we could all relate to. I highly recommend this book to anyone dealing with a brain tumour and all their loved ones.
