Product Description
Opening the Energy Gates of Your Body introduces the key concepts of chi gung in a manner both accessible and understandable to Westerners. With fascinating insights gained from years of training in Asia as a warrior, healer, and priest, Bruce Frantzis demystifies the concept of "chi," the body’s vital energy life force, and shows why this 3000-year-old system of self-healing works. The book provides a set of enjoyable, low impact exercises that readers can learn on their own, including standing chi gung, a core exercise that effectively boosts performance for martial artists, athletes, business people, and others. Body alignments and Taoist breathing, fundamentals that are the foundation of all Taoist energy practices, are also taught, with special alignments that benefit those who must sit for long periods of time. The book also reveals how chi gung can enhance other forms of exercise, from yoga and Pilates to golf and basketball.

5 out of 5 stars Thank you Bruce   September 22, 2009
Helen Anderson (Wentworth Falls, Blue Mountains nsw Australia)
I finally have my copy and can't put it down. I have already begun using the exercises, which are bringing relief to my very painful muscles. I have a lower back injury, expensive, fun thieving, injury and I know that I will recover learning from Bruce. I may not have been so focused on taking care of my body, or may not have discovered Bruce's teachings, had I not tripped over that low lying branch in the bush! The injury has been a powerful catalyst for change in my life, helping me to deeply appreciate good health and many beautiful everyday occurances in life. I am inspired to learn from him and will buy more of his books and dvds, cds... I recommend his work. There are thousands of quigongs out there and every teacher has there own way. This way is a good way to walk. Kind regards, Helen Anderson, Blue Mountains, Australia.

3 out of 5 stars A great book, but you really need a teacher..   September 12, 2009

There are two main things about this book:

A) It's filled with loads of practical information, and great advice both for martial artists and those who practice Qigong. I found the several chapters on standing meditation (Zhan zhuang) especially enlightening.

B) Much of the book is detailing his main methods of clearing Qi blockages, which are the "swings". The "Swings" would be very difficult to do properly without a qualified instructor, and thus I considered those portions of the book (50% or more) useless.

5 out of 5 stars Pure Gold   March 9, 2009

This beautiful book is pure gold! Using very clear language with precise details, Bruce Frantzis takes you from an overview of the field of Chinese energy arts to a step by step series of exercises designed to help you feel your energy at progressively more subtle levels and improve the flow of energy through your body.

One of my favorite chapters is about how to drop your energy, to lower the center of
your energy focus. For me this meant especially sinking energy from my head neck and shoulders so it falls into my belly and down into my feet and through my feet into the earth. This practice has improved my ability to focus in general, to be calm, and also - along with the work on body alignments - relieved pain in my knees and feet.

I have now worked with Bruce Frantzis and students of his, and I find this book is a very faithful representation and recording of how a personal teacher instructs, including warnings about working too fast or pushing too far, and how to tell when you are doing the practice correctly. This work is in a way quite simple, but profound. And it works! I use the book as a reference all the time now that I study Chi Gung regularly.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent discussion of internal practices   February 26, 2009

This book does a very good job of covering the purposes and techniques of many internal aspects of Tai Chi and Chi Gung. That's no mean feat, as the topic is incredibly deep and requires years of study to understand even partially. This book won't instantly make you a master of these arts, but it is a valuable companion to a study of any sort of internal energy and movement work. Although I think studying with an instructor is invaluable, for those seeking more reading on this topic, Bruce's other books (particularly The Power of Internal Martial Arts and Chi: Combat and Energy Secrets of Ba Gua, Tai Chi and Hsing-I) continue this exploration in depth.

5 out of 5 stars Ok for reference or collection   September 3, 2008

Go to Google books, and google will show a few pages.
The author gives honor to his teacher with a picture included.
That doesn't prove that it is real, but worth a read.

Another picture shows the basic standing posture, which is taught in
other books. Postures seem correct.
Can you achieve the same level as the master, the old man? Takes at least 4 years to see results, and 10 years to complete. How many of you have the patience?

Thanks to the internet, and other distractions, I didn't have the patience. No I don't have an IPOD, if I have that, I wouldn't be
doing my Tai chi everyday.
