Product Description As an endurance athlete with a lifelong weight problem, Jayne Williams struggles daily with the complex and powerful lures of food. Truly dedicated to working out, to having "the wind in my hair as I hurtle my bicycle around the backroads," Williams is nonetheless far from immune to the dark pull of exercise as penance for culinary sins committed, or about to be committed. I Need This Donut (To Fuel My Workout) dissects this always chronic, sometimes comic, often desperate conflict between the discipline of the triathlete and the hedonism of the fat girl. In a world where most of us have more resources for healthy living than you can shake a stick at, but we just keep getting fatter and fatter, the author's exploration is supremely timely, about as universal as they come, excruciatingly honest, and a rollicking good read.

Inspirational! August 24, 2009 Fast Reader in CA (San Francisco, CA USA) This book is written to inspire people who are not already physically active on a regular basis to engage in any sport or activity that gets them moving, whether recreational or competitive. It is not limited to triathalons or to running, biking and swimming. While aimed primarily at older and/or overweight people, especially women, anyone interested in exercise will benefit from the cheerful, anecdotal discussion of topics like clothing, scheduling and positive thinking. The thoughts on participating in competitive sports for non-competitive reasons are excellent. General advice is given and some basic overall guidelines, like checking your heart rate, but no specific training guidelines or programs are included. The book is funny. It is easy to read in small bits, a few pages at a time.
Not up to par May 30, 2009 Connie (Auburn, CA) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I love Jayne Williams! She offered great hope and motivation in her first book "Slow Fat Triathlete". However, this second book was very disappointing. It's filled with fluff, a few tid bits of wit and wisdom and doesn't have much to offer in the way of how to "shape up".
Motivation you need March 22, 2009 Michelle Dunn (NH) I found this book to be motivating and I learned a lot about exercising, resting, eating and the emotional-ness of exercise. I liked this book even though I am not training for a triathlete type experience. Many great tips on when to slow down, pick it up, eating, just getting out there, what to wear, everything.

I was so excited to read this book, and I am happy for Jayne that she has another book out. She was an inspiration to me when I first started in triathlon. I laughed out loud twice in the first 40 pages, and that is a sure sign of a good humor writer. That said, I felt the book was disjointed. For example, she says don't worry about numbers, and a few pages later there's a whole essay on keeping track of numbers.
I kept waiting for Jayne to explain how and why she gained so much weight back. That seemed like the elephant in the room. Was there an injury? Emotional eating? Pregnancy? Why doesn't she answer the obvious question of What the heck happened? You can't write a memoir-style book about weight and fitness without writing about your weight going up 50 pounds.
The last thing that really bugged me was the ugly cover - it's all brown and pukey and grim. Plus, it says BUTT right over a patch of brown mud. Now, I'm not a graphic designer, but that just seems wrong. Did Jayne start running from across the river? I don't get it. Come on, she lives in California - couldn't they get any blue sky or water that day? I thought the other cover's book was great - but this cover is gross. I know that's not the author's fault - but it does affect how the book will sell...
If you need inspiration this is a Must Read! December 16, 2008 Kelly the Fit Chick (Northeast Ohio) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Jayne does it again! An entertaining guide filled with inspiration to leave the couch behind. Great tools to help you battle the negative thoughts that can sabotage your goals. If you're a gal (or guy) starting out, or in need of some new focus this book is a great starting point. Make sure you also check out her first book Slow Fat Triathlete: Live Your Athletic Dreams in the Body You Have Now She did a triathlon, I've done a triathlon, wouldn't you like to do a triathlon too?
