Detox Diet that REALLY Works July 22, 2003 Frances Barsh (Madison Wisconsin) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
You can spend a lot more for a detox program but you won't get the guidance and results that this book gives you. I followed the author's suggestions, both emotional and physical, and can report a change in my life that is invaluable. Not only did I lose weight and gain energy but my perspective on the world has changed. I feel connected and hopeful. And don't worry about not being able to follow the program. Clear step-by-step instructions are given as well as plenty of inspirational advice. Try it.
changed my mind body and spirit February 6, 2003 This January I did my second ten day detox and this time with my man. Both times this book was so helpful when it came to sticking it out. Robin gave me enough to think about and ways to redirect my attention so that I really developed new patterns in my life as a whole. My husband's tale is even more compelling. He tends to be a workaholic. He has asthma and was having pain in his kidneys, dark circles under his eyes and a very short fuse. This detox helped him to take back the control of what he wanted his routine and himself to look like. It has been a month since we did this detox. He is patient, happy and so much healthier. The ten days we spent doing this together has helped us to enjoy planning our time more. If you start the detox on a Monday then the fasting happens on a Saturday which we spent at the spa. It was the first real date we'd had in a coupla Years. I highly reccomend this book because it is accesssible and practical. I learned so much about food and cooking, about my routine and what I want. The detox has made my system much stronger and, I feel so much more beautiful inside and out. Buy it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
10 Days of Misery January 24, 2001 11 out of 11 found this review helpful
I'm on Day Three of my fourth Westen-style detox, and I keep asking myself why I come back to it every six or eight months. It's certainly not the author's qualifications (search hard -- you won't find any described in the book), nor is it her accuracy in describing the experience (for example, "after the Day of Abstention the body is usually happy to continue without food"-- yeah, right). In fact, the book itself contains inconsistencies (it lays out a strict regimen for the first three days -- every morsel is prescribed -- but also mentions that by Day 3 you should be off meat, eggs, dairy, coffee, alcohol, and cigarettes), over-warns on the dangers of living in today's polluted atmosphere, over-praises some home cures and remedies, and contains these weird little poetic quotes and insertions ("embrace life!") that make you want to burn the thing when you haven't eaten for sixteen hours and your heart rate keeps accelerating for no discernable reason. HOWEVER -- it works. After each time I've done this 10-day detox (and I checked with my doctor, who said it was okay), desires for booze, coffee, grease, etc., have taken weeks to return; I've lost a few pounds that don't come back for several months; and I've gotten a jolt of fulfillment from being able to control my appetite. Does it make you feel a decade younger? No. But it might make you feel that being whatever age you are is not the worst thing in the world.
Good with a little bit of a twist May 19, 2000 Minnesota Raven (Minnesota) 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
When I became interested in detox as a general subject I started reading a lot of books and came across this one. This book offers more than one method of detoxification which I especially appreciated but at the same time I wasn't that crazy about some of the alternatives but that could just be more. Overall it was informative, cheap and easy to understand.
