Product Description Laura Jensen Walker went into early menopause after her bout with cancer and can sympathize with other "mentalpause" sufferers and survivors. As in Thanks for the Mammogram!, she uses hilarious vignettes and a delightful mix of wit and wisdom to connect with her readers. With chapters about how "All Varicose Veins Lead to Rome" and "PMS Is a Picnic in the Park," this book helps women dealing with "mentalpause" and those around them gain a better understanding--and certainly a lighter attitude--about this passage of life. Mentalpause . . . and Other Midlife Laughs will get readers laughing at themselves as they hear Laura lightheartedly describe her age spots, lament her sagging everything, and look anew at love after forty.

A book for the 'old at heart' May 6, 2008 BookWorm (United States) I'm in my mid-40s, the same age as the author when this book was written, but it seemed like it could have been written by someone in their 60s! There were a few laughs, but I emphasize "a few;" for a supposedly humorous book, it was somewhat short on the humor. It seemed like the message was to give up and wallow in old age...Geez, there are so many ways to stave off creaky bones and saggy buns and actually feel good in your 40s, 50s and beyond, but you'd never know it from this book. I guess I missed the point, judging from the other positive reviews.
Verrrrry Funny! January 7, 2005 Sarah Menninger 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
This book was a riot! It really validated me as a woman over age 40, and I could relate to everything the author wrote about menopause. The author's humor is subtle and tongue-in-cheek. I was somewhat disappointed that there wasn't much in the book concerning partenting in middle age, or having a baby in midlife. For that, the best book around is "Parentaly Insane: Insights From The Edge...of Midlife!" by Julie Donner Andersen, a much more comprehensive, more bluntly honest and hilarious view of midlife womanhood, marriage, and parenting.
I can't WAIT for menopause, thanks to Laura! September 4, 2002 Carmen Leal (Kailua, HI USA) Thanks to Laura I am no longer dreading menopause! Laura is not only funny but wise in her writing, and she has done a delightful job of bringing the inevitability of menopause down to everyone's level. As she says, the alternative is something I'd rather not think about. What I love about Laura's writing is that the chapters are bite-sized for busy lives. I also love her freshness and the way I can easily give her books to friends going through the same situations. Many of my friends are not Christian but they all love Laura's style and I can't help but think God's words touch people exactly where they need to hear it thanks to Laura's humor.
It made me laugh through my hot flashes January 17, 2002 Judy Romagnoli (Bangor,PA>) I enjoyed Mentalpause to the max. It was upbeat and encouraging It made me laugh at myself because I could relate to all of the stories. I think Laura did a wonderful job showing women that there is a funny side to menopause. Menopause is a part of life and Laura's book shows women how to embrace it with laughter.
THANK YOU, LAURA JENSEN WALKER! August 6, 2001 Eva Marie Everson (Central Florida, United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I laughed til I cried! Not only does Laura Jensen Walker relate to those women who experience menopause at the medically correct age, she also speaks to those of us who have gone thru it early in life. AND...she somehow manages to hit every avenue of it without embarassing herself or her readers! The only red face comes from the age old hot flash one may suffer thru while reading the book! There's no reason to suffer thru menopause anymore! Laura has taken that which we dreaded and made it...well, ALMOST fun! Thank you, Laura Jensen Walker for putting into words what my hot flashes have been trying to say for so long!"
