Amazon.com Review Designed to catapult your body into a state of fat meltdown, Dr. Atkins's diet has taken America by storm. It targets insulin, the hormone that regulates blood sugar levels. The bodies of most overeaters are continually in a state of hyperinsulinism; their bodies are so adept at releasing insulin to help convert excess carbohydrates to fat that there's always too much of the hormone circulating through the body. This puts the body into a bind; it always wants to store fat. Even when people with hyperinsulinism try to lose weight--especially when they cut fat but increase carbohydrate consumption--their efforts will fail. This is why Dr. Atkins refers to insulin as "the fat-producing hormone." Dr. Atkins's diet is extremely low in carbohydrates, which helps to regulate insulin production and decrease circulating insulin; less insulin soon results in less fat storage and fewer food cravings. The diet is far from torturous, though--those who've tried it attest that hunger is not a part of this plan. Ninety percent of Dr. Atkins's patients--more than 25,000 of them--have experienced dramatic weight loss. The book includes recipes for such luscious, low-carb dishes as lobster soup, zabaglione, sea bass, and blueberry ice cream, and even includes a carbohydrate gram counter and menus.

Unhealthy Diet - I Met Dr Atkins Personally October 29, 2008 Rhode Island Reader (Rhode Island United States) 0 out of 4 found this review helpful
In 1998, my company at the time asked me to meet Dr Atkins with a view toward a business deal we were contemplating with him. He was so unhealthy in appearance (palid, exhausted) that I told my boss "Don't do a deal with this guy, I think he's going to die soon." Since then, I've done more research into the science behind low-carb/high-protein. The fact is most Americans already get enough protein in their diets. They also get too many carbs, but that's from overeating and over-indulgence in highly processed foods... not because carbs are inherently bad. Moderation on all fronts is the only diet that works. Eating mostly meat is going to work as well as the Banana Diet did, you'll lose weight at first but then get sick and ultimately gain it back.
Solved my Blood Sugar Highs! October 19, 2008 DB7 (Dallas, TX USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I know it sounds too good to be true, but I started this way of eating (WOE) on 07/22/08 and from day one my blood sugar never went over 110. It had previously been between 150-250 (even while taking 4 insulin shots a day and 2000 mg of Metformin). I have lost almost 40 lbs in 3 months and have never been healthier. If you have the will, this will be a life changer for you.
A Must For The Atkins' Lifestyle October 9, 2008 Sally A. Wolfe (Carroll Valley, PA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I purchased this book because I wanted to see what, if anything, Dr. Atkins had changed from the earlier edition(s) and this editions provides more insight and just tells it like it when you need to change your eating habits and the possible reasons an individual has a weight problem. I am now down 25 lbs and having a great time trying recipes and getting into clothes I haven't worn in a while.
Atkins Diet book is the low-carb Bible September 23, 2008 T. Zimmerman (Nashville, Tennessee) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
He researched and introduced the low-carb concepts. Book has clear explanations and many recipes. Highly recommended. (Oh yeah, and it WORKS!)
Most successful diet I ever used. September 17, 2008 Connie's Timeless Treasures 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I will put this very simply. I had tried many other diets that only worked while I was on them. Dr. Atkins' diet taught me how to eat healthy, feel full, and after I lost the weight I wanted I was able to maintain my weight by continuing to eat most healthful foods. He also explained why his diet works and what to look for in the foods we eat. I would also like to point out that I started an exercise program of walking 1 mile 5 days a week when I could and going to a gym 2 days a week for 30 minutes. I went to Curves for women but any program would work. It is much easier to keep off the weight and feel good by continuing to eat heathy using this book and excersing at the same time. That is the purpose of a diet - helping you to make healthy lifestyle changes, and this diet did it for me.
