Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.com
Yoga instructor Barbara Benagh has practiced and taught yoga for nearly 35 years. She discovered yoga while living in England and began teaching there. She moved to Boston and opened The Yoga Studio on Beacon Hill in 1980.

In addition to her local classes Barbara teaches yoga seminars throughout the US and internationally. She is a regular contributor of articles to Yoga Journal magazine. She has several audio CDs of live classes available as well as DVDs, the latest being Yoga for Beginners released by Body + Soul magazine, and Yoga for Stress Relief that includes a discussion on meditation from the Dalai Lama.

Barbara was kind enough to answer some questions from Amazon.com about this unique line of yoga DVDs.

How are these DVDs different from other yoga DVDs?

I was drawn to working with Bodywisdommedia because they produce DVDs they are interactive. Rather than a "one size fits all" single routine that is typical of most products, these DVDs offer choice, allowing the user to customize and change their yoga practice to suit their needs. No two persons are the same so the ability to change your practice - easing shoulder tension one day and an invigorating morning wake up the next - come as close as possible to allowing you to address your individual needs at home. Not only do people have different physical needs, but they have different time constraints as well. If you have only 20 minutes, there is a practice for you but there are longer practices as well (some as long as 90 minutes) that address the total body/mind connection. The sheer number of yoga sequences offered on each of these DVDs is a first. They are incredibly comprehensive.

How were you able to get the Dalai Lama involved?

This project dovetailed perfectly with the Dalai Lama's message that modern stress is one of the greatest obstacles to our mental happiness and physical wellbeing. Because we are long-time sincere practitioners, having a 30-minute lecture of the Dalai Lama teaching how to meditate on the Yoga for Stress Relief DVD was a perfect fit. Bodywisdommedia also has a broader relationship with the Office of Tibet and are releasing historic lectures with "A Path to Happiness" being the first one.

How will potential buyers of these DVDs know which one is right for them?

The titles are very indicative of what appears on the DVD and therefore a good guide. I really enjoyed making Yoga for Stress Relief because it is incredibly relevant. We strove to make the sequences accessible to as many people as possible, whether they are a beginner or long time practitioner. Yoga for Beginners is a great, non-threatening place to get started and includes lots of sound technique developed over my 30 years as a yoga teacher. Power Yoga for Every Body is a bit more challenging taking you from the beginning level and gradually progressing to much more demanding routines.

5 out of 5 stars my favorite by far   August 30, 2008
I had taken some yoga classes at the gym before but sometimes it was too challenging. Barbara takes you through a good pace with room for progression, so this DVD can last you a long time before moving on to something more advanced. The poses are challenging but not impossible, making me feel motivated to keep using this DVD. I like how you can choose the workouts to last from 20-70 minutes, so I can choose which one to do depending on how much time I have. You can target your exercises for specific parts of your body, like hamstrings, or choose a type of workout like the energizing one or quiet evening one. This was a well designed beginners program. No excessive distracting comments, no embarassing looking poses that you wouldn't want to do in front of other people, tips on checking your posture, etc. I would highly recommend this -- no wonder it's the best selling yoga DVD on Amazon.

5 out of 5 stars Starting the day with Barbara Benagh   August 29, 2008
I rotate among several beginning yoga classes and several DVDs/tapes, and I like Benagh's Yoga for Beginners best. I especially recommend this DVD if you intend to exercise before work. She has a soothing voice, the ocean views are lovely, and the degree of difficulty is appropriate. She also is the most articulate of the instructors I've experienced--she explains details of body position that others overlook, yet she seems to speak relatively little -- you really can get absorbed in the practice.

5 out of 5 stars A DVD For Beginners   August 29, 2008
I purchased this and AM/PM earlier this year and it was a very worthwhile purchase. This DVD has alot of routines to start learning basic moves with good instructions on form and alignment, and then gives you longer routines and some more poses:

STARTING

Backbends
Standing Poses
Strength and Balance
Sun Salutations
Seated Hip Openers

LONGER ROUTINES

Basics
Energizing
Strength
Rejuvenate
Breathing and Centering
Quieting

Barbara's voice and instruction, coupled with the beautiful beach setting, makes this a wonderful DVD to learn with.

5 out of 5 stars Good Way To Start Yoga   August 14, 2008
Good selection of routines with focus on basic poses that then become more challening. Watch the basics and work with the moves and you will get the hang of them.

There are routines that focus on relaxing and others are on strength, enough here to cover anything I wanted and the instruction is clear.

I like this alot.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good   August 6, 2008
My wife have been trying to get me to try yoga for awhile and got me this DVD. I am really enjoying it alot and learning. I like the selections and instruction. Highly recommended.
