Amazon.com "It's been a long time since I was a pony." These immortal words launched one of television's most unlikely, but enduring friendships between architect Wilbur Post and Mister Ed, his talking horse. What better escape from the onslaught of reality television than a thoroughbred example of unreality television? Although, so convincing is Alan Young as Wilbur, and so easy his rapport with his equine costar, that you really do believe a horse can talk (Ed's voice is courtesy of Western character actor Alan Lane). This two-disc set saddles up 21 episodes from the first three seasons of this Golden Globe-winning series, which was recently added to the TV Land stable of '60s retro faves. Director Arthur Lubin knew his way around the barn. He directed the best of the Francis series of talking-mule comedies. While the episode with Mae West is sadly absent, this set does include Ed's memorable encounters with Clint Eastwood (then starring on Rawhide), George Burns (who produced the series' pilot episode), and original diva Zsa Zsa Gabor. Young is a gifted comic actor in his own right, but just as George Burns had his Gracie, Young has his Ed, who gets all the good lines, as when Wilbur congratulates Ed on curing Zsa Zsa's fear of horses. Ed replies, "She cured my fear of Hungarians." But the writers took the show's surreal premise and galloped with it, as when Ed joins the beatnik set in "Ed, the Beachcomber." Sound unbelievable? We'll give Ed the last word, of course, of course. "Don't try to understand it," he advises Wilbur during their first meeting. "It's bigger than both of us." --Donald Liebenson

Double-sided discs not great October 14, 2009 Steve A. Nordlund (Seattle WA) A great package of episodes, but a couple of sides have stopped playing, even in my computer, which ususally will read discs otherwise unplayable in my DVD player. I've occationally had similar difficulties with other double-sided disc sets (Leave It To Beaver), and they have no visible damage. I wish these vendors would knock off this budget move. Other series like That Girl and Donna Reed seem to be much better products - single-sided.The Best of Mister Ed - Volume One
Mister Ed Volume One July 6, 2009 Michael J. Barry Jr. (MI USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Couldn't be happier. I bought this for my wife who loves horses and of course loved this show as a kid (so did I). Picture and sound quality is outstanding, original pilot episode is in here, thrilled to be able to enjoy Mr.Ed for years to come. A trip back to a more innocent time.
Wait for complete first season, due out in the fall! June 19, 2009 Jonathan Pinto (Ohio) I was so glad to hear that Shout Factory will be releasing Mister Ed: The Complete First Season, on DVD, on October 6, 2009! I was considering buying the "Best of" sets until I saw that they are ridiculously expensive since I assume they are now out of print. Hopefully sales of the first season will be sucessful so they will release the rest of the series.
ed's 1st season March 2, 2009 D. Nakao Like Barney Miller, they don't make shows like this anymore. I bet that with today's technology, a remake or even a Mister Ed movie can easily be made. I'm scratching my head why this show didn't last longer .
huge fans of mister ed December 2, 2008 A. Rizzo (MI) We bought this to show our kids ( 9 and 5 yo) and they absolutely loved it, they don't always get the jokes but love Ed and the trouble he gets in. We have watched it over and over, even in the car on road trips. I think that it is time to buy volume two.
