Amazon.com A workout that balances both the body and the mind can be found in the Basic Yoga Workout for Dummies. Fundamental postures are explained and demonstrated slowly with an emphasis on breathing and motion. Sara Ivanhoe teaches 12 basic poses that are termed the "daily dozen" and offers challenges and modifications to each of these moves. Ivanhoe presents these concepts in an approachable and calming manner that adds to the overall relaxed feeling that this session exudes. Newcomers to the practice of yoga will learn jargon, essential postures, and focusing techniques. Experienced participants may find some information redundant, but Ivanhoe offers such thorough explanations about each posture that you can't help but expand your existing knowledge of yoga. As the mountain pose, standing forward bend, and downward facing dog are explained (not to mention the nine other poses within the "daily dozen"), proper body alignment becomes the focus. Meticulous attention is given to the connection between breathing and body movement with several reminders to keep the spine in "neutral alignment." This session ranks great for safety and content and makes yoga accessible to anyone who "always wanted to, but never did." This is a substantial program that can introduce the basics and build your understanding of yoga. --Olivia Voigts

good instructor September 29, 2009 A. Clay (Mobile, AL United States) i have really enjoyed this yoga dvd, the instructor is very good. reassuring, nice calm voice, asks you to push yourself, but not hurt yourself. the "for dummies" parts can be a little distracting, but i'm sure that after several times i won't even notice them any more.
Basic Yoga Workout for Dummies August 13, 2009 M. Bell (San Francisco, CA USA) This is an excellent video. A lot of people try to do yoga but stop because they are in pain or they twist the wrong way. This video makes sure that doesn't happen. There are step by step instructions through the whole video, making sure that your back and knees are protected at all times. There are also alternative ways to do the poses, for those who have a bad back or something, they can use a chair. While you are doing the poses, you also get educated about where yoga originated and what the benefits are of it. Susan is an awesome teacher, she makes you feel good about what you are doing and after you are done, you aren't in any pain, you feel very much at peace and relaxed.
Just what I needed August 10, 2009 Petereno I am 68 years young, and had never practiced any yoga. I bought Basic Yoga Workout for Dummies to supplement my twice weekly introductory classes, and it is perfect for my needs. It gives me the Daily Dozen poses to help me in between formal class sessions. It delivers what the name promises, and is a perfect way to start the day.
Great Product August 3, 2009 J. Manson (Mountaintop, PA) Really good program for the beginner. Walks you through each exercise with consise explanations on each pose. Very happy with the product and would purchase additional items by the same trainer.
It's an instructional video, not a workout. July 26, 2009 Anonymous I wish the marketing gurus at the "Dummies" series had thought through the title of this VHS/DVD better. "Workout" is really a misnomer. Calling it "Basic Yoga Instruction" would have been more accurate and perhaps even prevented some of the complaints from reviewers expecting a quickly paced yoga practice/workout.
In this video, Sara Ivanhoe teaches 12 common yoga poses in a simple setting that doesn't distract or annoy. As a true beginner, I appreciated Ivanhoe's warm and encouraging manner, the depth of information she provided for each pose, and her clear directions on when to inhale/exhale during various movements or when holding a pose. Yes, it takes about 40 minutes to go through the 12 poses, but there's no pressure whatsoever to complete all of the poses every single practice. Again, this really isn't a "workout" tape. It's an instructional video that a beginner can use over a period of time. There's certainly nothing wrong with practicing just a few poses, or even one at a time, until all are familiar, and this video is perfect for that. The material includes variations for many of the poses, making it suitable for people of different fitness levels -- or for the same viewer to return to as her/his strength and flexibility improve.
The only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is that I really dislike the whole "Dummies" shtick. Calling your target audience "dumb" is bad enough -- but here the juvenile graphics for which the "Dummies" series is known are turned into animated pop-ups with very loud sound effects. This is not only incredibly annoying, but they are also completely out-of-keeping with the otherwise calm and soothing tone of the video.
FYI, when I recently decided to expand my yoga library, I skipped right over Ivanhoe's second "Dummies" tape and went directly to her "Yoga Body Makeover Series," which I look forward to receiving in a few days.
