Amazon.com There's no fancy set, no drumbeats, and no modeling of the latest workout fashions in Pilates on the Go. It's just instructor Maria Leone, a mat, a band, and tubing--and 52 minutes of Pilates instruction. After a few minutes of explanation of the principles and goals of this German exercise system, Leone warms up and gets down to business with 100s, rollups, rowing, scissors, criss-cross--the works. She doesn't blend with yoga, dance, or Tai Chi; instead she takes viewers through most of the mat-based Pilates catalog (corkscrew, swan, seal, you name it), focusing on stretching the spine, breathing correctly, and using "core strength." (Translated: Get those abs in shape!) The camera work is inconsistent and thus noticeable when it shouldn't be, but otherwise this is about as straightforward and useful a Pilates instruction as you're likely to find. Some experience or at least determination to learn would be helpful. --Kimberly Heinrichs
Description Improve posture, strengthen the back and abdominal muscles, increase flexibility, prevent stress and back pain, tone muscles, and sharpen the mind/body connection. The Pilates method is a form of isometric exercise developed and practiced to simultaneously stretch, strengthen, tone and align the body, while eliminating excess tension and strain on the joints. The method focuses on alignment, balance, posture, and breathing, and requires total concentration. It is the triad of mind, body and spirit which separates Pilates from other workouts you've experienced. IDEA master trainer Maria Leone has been teaching Pilates since 1989; her extensive knowledge and teaching experience make this video a must-have for people of all fitness levels.

Third Time Purchasing This Awesome DVD March 21, 2008 Patricia A. Williford (Los Angeles, CA) I keep losing this because I actually do take it "to go". I just started taking private sessions at a Pilates studio in Beverly Hills. The owner turned out to be Maria Leone from this dvd that I have enjoyed for years! She has succeeded at producing a mat pilates routine encorporating a few props (bands) that actually feels like she is directly in front of you teaching only you. Her manner on the cd is identical to the way she teaches in real life. What a value. Pilates at a gym is not cheap. What it will do for your posture will not only be a cosmetic plus but it could extend your life...especially if there is anything going on with your back right now. You can only benefit from strengthening your core. It may be difficult at first and you may feel too embarassed to do it in public until you have an idea of what to expect...or maybe you don't want to wear those sausage-like tights in front of the pilates-bodies at the gym just yet? You will become familiar with pilates while being taught by one of the very best. Then you can take it a step furthur and either get private instruction so that you can be monitored and have mistakes corrected or you can take a group class. Still, you can always rely on this dvd when you can't make it to class. You can't press "pause" in the middle of class like you can with this. I recommend scheduling some thai massages or deep tissue massages after your first couple of times getting into this. You will use muscles you didn't know you had. Take it easy.

I absolutely loved this pilates tape. It was great for any level from beginner to advanced. It was so simple and easy you can do it anywhere. This is by far my favorite pilates workout.
Nice Moderately Challenging Pilates Program May 7, 2006 Yoga Dad 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
"Pilates On The Go" by Maria Leone is an enjoyable and intelligently designed practice. What I found enjoyable was Maria's personality and clear instruction as well as the production values (the set and music) which though simple work really well to create a nice atmosphere. What I found to be intelligent was the way she builds into the exercises. She always starts simpler and then moves into the more complex movements. What I like about this is that for those folks who are more advanced, you are properly warmed up before putting your body into a more challenging position. Those people who are less advanced can just repeat the simpler version a second time until some point in the future when they are ready to move into the more advanced version of the exercises. Overall I found this to be moderately challenging, though certainly the side series was definitely more intense than some of the other sections. If you are new to Pilates workout might feel a bit tougher than my description as moderate. Compared to something like Jennifer Kries "Precision Toning" certainly "Pilates On The Go" is a bit less intense. To do this program in full you will need a Pilates flex band as well as exercise bands (rubber tubes w/ handles). You can definitely get a good full body workout with a program like this that will strengthen and stretch your whole body. Personally I like to follow my Pilates practice w/ Yoga because Yoga works the body differently in many ways, though certainly there are some similarities between some exercises. But Yoga is a nice complement, particularly the standing poses, which can help round out your fitness program. Other Pilates programs I'd recommend are Stott Pilates "Basics" and Hilary Burnett's "Intermediate" for a more classical approach to Pilates. For a slightly different twist on Pilates Janis Saffell's "Beverly Hills Pilates" is a 40 minute, challenging program that is a very creative approach to the Pilates system. For some versatile Pilates programs I like Total Mix "Pilates and Yoga" w/ Tracy York and Suzanne which is made up of 10 minute segments which you can program up to three segments in a "mixer" (like a "matrix"), and Liz Gillies "Progressive Pilates" four ten minute target zone workouts. This is also made up of ten minute segments which focus on different body areas, it's not programmable but easy enough to work with by going to the scene selection. For a fun and also creative approach to Pilates I also have been enjoying "Carribean Workout" pilates programs which feature Jenn Tilley as the Pilates instructor with Shelley McDonald as the "Student". There are "Pilates", "Pilates Plus" (which each contain FOUR 22 minute workouts, you can also buy them together as a set) and "Core Pilates" which has THREE twenty two minute workouts. They are from a TV show and so fade in and out of commercial breaks here and there (not always perfectly) but they are effective and very enjoyable programs which are very easy to fit into most anyone's schedule.
Cheaply produced dvd with an expensive price tag. May 28, 2005 Andrea (CT) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
I searched for a pilates dvd that incorporated pilates band with the exercises, so I was excited to find this dvd. It was more expensive than any other of the exercise/pilates dvd's that I currently own but it received good reviews and she seemed to be a well educated pilates instructor so I decided to buy it anyway. Well I was highly dissapointed with this dvd for many reasons. 1. Poorly produced dvd. Every other pilates dvd I own, is shot in a well lit studio, on carpeting and the instructor uses a pilates or sticky mat on top of the carpet. This instructor looks like she shot it in her home with at thin sticky mat on a brick floor! Not a good example for a first time buyer. There are also times when when she goes in and out of focus, now if this was a cheaper dvd I would'nt mind so much but it's one of the pricier ones. It does not even come with any paraphanalia at all not even a booklet inside the dvd box. 2. Many other pilates dvds also have music in the background that can be motivating for many people, this has only her voice speaking to you while she is doing these exercises. Very dissapointing for me. 3. Many other dvds have wonderful menus set up so that you can decide whether or not to have a beginner or intermediate session, or you can pick your sessions by the amount of time you have, sadly this dvd has none of these conveniences which should be there especially because of the price point. 4. Now I am not disputing Ms. Leone's knowledge of pilates nor her ability, however, even though she says she will show modifications of her exercises she often does not, and shows them all full out and at full range of motion, so if your not extremely flexible and are not sure how to modify your body positions properly, this is not the dvd for you. Many of the exercises she does do in this dvd are considered to be advanced exercises on some of the other pilates dvd's that I own, so be forewarned, this is not a beginner dvd. No disrespect to Ms. Leone I am sure she is an excellent instructor in person, she just did not have a good production team working with her on this project.
Not Challenging April 9, 2004 A. Vegan (Ontario Canada) 6 out of 8 found this review helpful
I've tried quite a few Pilates videos and this is one I would not recommend. When I started the video, I was really disappointed to see that a pilates band was required for the exercises. But nowhere on the box did it mention that. There were a few movements such as leg circles, rolling and the mermaid that are done without a band but most of the workout requires it. Thankfully I rented this and didn't spend money on it.
