 A good story August 12, 2008
This story got off a little slow, but I found myself wanting to spend time with the characters after I got to know them a little better. Probably because I had my first and only child at 35, this book sucked me in until I finished it in a matter of 3 days.

this is a fantastic story, another winner by emily giffin. the story is very layered, with a bunch of side plots involving the main character's sisters and her best friend. each provides a very different aspect on marriage and the baby issue and all of them are really well constructed. this is the most complex of emily giffin's books but, i believe, maybe the most rewarding. the o. henry ending is fantastic.

While I had high hopes for my first Emily Giffin read, I was left disappointed. I just didn't care for the main character, Claudia. It took me a while to put my finger on it, but she had an arrogance that made her unlikeable. I liked the fact that Giffin was tackling the subject of choosing to remain childless; however, Baby Proof ultimately seemed to sell out and challenge the idea that one can be childless and happy.
The bulk (300 pages or so) of the novel centers around Claudia, her sisters', and her friend's relationship difficulties, yet Giffin tries to shove tidy, happy endings for all of the characters into the last twenty pages or so. The abrupt ending actually made it feel forced and unrealistic.
I am not giving up on Giffin's books based on this one so-so read. Despite the main character's likability issues and the flimsy ending, I found her writing style to be witty and engaging, and I'll give her books another try.

To have or not to have? Children that is.
Though I don't agree with the main character, I can fully support her decision to NOT have children. I just wished she knew how to COMMUNICATE what she was feeling to her husband.
It seemed like they just walked out on each other. Neither wanted to be the one to ask to stay. It was a whole book of misunderstandings and miscommunications. At times it was frustrating!
But, oh, how I wanted to cry when they both set their minds to it! And the last scene with them in the coffee shop- their final talk- my stomach was in knots over it!
Lovely story- very entertaining- about making commitments and offering a common ground- making sacrifices- meeting in the middle and making everyone involved a "little" happy.

I great story line, but I found the main character "Claudia" not very likeable. I can't put my finger on exactly what it was, but she just seemed very cold. It didn't have to do with the fact that she didn't want kids (and I get that), it was something else. Also, there were parts of the story that I just found less believable.
While the book held my interest, I would say it's just average. I did listen to the abridged audio version read by Cynthia Nixon, who has a nice voice, but has a rather flat reading style. I may get the book from the library to see which sections were "abridged", which add to something needed, but I am thinking that it may not.
I will probably try another by emily griffin based on good reviews, but listening to this book alone would not compell me to readd more.
