Description
: This unintimidating video presents the basics of playing guitar in an easy-to-follow format. By simply watching the instructor on screen and following along, you can learn to form chords, fingerpick and strum in different patterns, and play songs in a variety of styles—all without reading music! Guitar for Dummies provides step-by-step instruction of all the skills needed to become an accomplished guitar player. You start by learning to play in tune and in rhythm and then move on to left-hand chords and right-hand strumming patterns. From there, you apply these techniques to several different musical styles, picking up tips and tricks on playing authentically in each style. Along the way, you learn how to develop your own practice routine and focus in on the areas you want to improve.
About the Instructor: Jon Chappell is an author, writer, and award-winning guitarist. He has served as editor-in-chief of Guitar Magazine and has performed with Graham Nash, Judy Collins, and Pat Benatar. He has published over 20 method books in seven different languages and is the author of The Recording Guitarist—A Guide for Home and Studio and two For Dummies books, Guitar for Dummies and Rock Guitar For Dummies.

5 out of 5 stars A Good Place To Begin   July 8, 2008
I've been playing around with my guitar for some time, trying to teach myself how to play the thing since professional lessons are way more than I can afford right now. This little DVD was just what I needed to get me past the chording hurdle. Being able to play along with someone else is a big help. I would recommend this DVD as a good beginning to teaching yourself how to play.

5 out of 5 stars Good lessons.   June 7, 2008
Still can't play the guitar. Maybe I should turn off my PC and go practice. That is the missing key to learn the guitar. This is a good helper.

2 out of 5 stars very ,very basic instructional dvd   February 11, 2008
Good, but extremely basic instructions. Rather short dvd. This is only for someone who is an absolute beginner with no prior experience. Anyone else would say "where's the beef?" Save your money and buy the book, it is much better than the dvd.

4 out of 5 stars guitar lessons   February 9, 2008
I think the dvd was very helpful, informative, and overall a pretty broad but simple guide to getting starting. One thing they left out that might have also helped me was a brief demo of changing or replacing your strings.

5 out of 5 stars Johnny's no Dummy, but this book helped him!   December 12, 2007

At the same time I bought my grandson a guitar from Amazon for his birthday, I decided to buy this video so he could learn the basics.

Not saying my grandson Johnny is a dummy--far from it!--all the title means to me is that it contains simple instructions to help beginners learn to play the quitar quicker.

With its easy-to-follow format, watching the instructor and following along, Johnny began picking and strumming in no time, and now he's a regular little Kenny Chessney. :)

A good investment.
