Not a good book for ASLOctober 20, 2008 R. Feretich 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The Vista Signing Naturally curriculum is terrible. I strongly suggest that students search for ASL courses based upon other curricula. The level 1 course consists of only a DVD and a workbook. There is no textbook. The workbook and DVD are good at quizzing you on ASL phrases and concepts, but they don't teach anything. An ASL curriculum needs to establish a set of vocabulary words to be learned for each unit. It must also provide illustrations (and descriptions) of how each vocabulary word is to be signed. Apparently the Signing Naturally curriculum believes that this is not necessary. The lack of a textbook makes studying and learning anything outside of class sessions very difficult.

Course book for students.September 27, 2005 Carter C. Kemp(Omaha, Ne USA) 14 out of 14 found this review helpful
This book is an excellent resource for the in-class student. However I do not recommend this book and its contents for the self instructing student. The manual displays signs without definitions and can lead to easy misinterpretation and poor context understanding and usuage. Once again though, it is an excellent book for the class room that builds upon itself gradually and quickly makes communication in ASL possible. I strongly recommend accompanying this instruction manual with a good ASL dictionary.
