great little film.....very hard to find, though! August 25, 2005 D. Pawl (Seattle) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I was so glad to see that this film is available to Amazon shoppers. I was lucky to first see this film on PBS, about a year ago. It is both funny and insightful. Gopal is a middle aged native of India, now living in New Jersey. He just doesn't have the personality or awareness to keep his wife, of many years, satisfied with him in their relationship. She ends up leaving him to go join an ashram in India, and devote her life to religion. His daughter is leaving for Mongolia with her German boyfriend to teach English. The guy is on his own, for the first time, in a very long time. It is then, that he begins to refer to the magazine, Cosmopolitan, a publication he onces shunned, for advice on conquering the hearts of women. He then he gets to test his new-found "suave" on the lady next door, Helen. This film is warm, funny and touching. It juxtaposes Bollywood dance sequences with scenes from Gopal's life, and fantasy flashbacks of his life with his wife and daughter, and his early childhood memories......Definitely worth checking out!
Cosmopolitan March 11, 2005 Monica D. Affleck (Philadelphia,, Pennsylvania United States) Nisha Ganatra's Cosmopolitan is an outstanding film. After Gopal's wife leaves him and goes back to India, and his daughter leaves with her boyfriend, he finds his daughter's Cosmopolitan magazine and his imagination runs wild. The film is very entertaining, Nisha's magical imagination, the music selections were great. I sort of felt sorry for Gopal because all he wanted was to have someone love him. Then there was his lovely neighbor!! The beautiful colors of the beautiful dancing Indian women are an added bonus in this film. Another fine one for Nisha.
