Amazon.com Review Barry Sears looks at why Americans still have dietary problems in spite of following the advice of experts. Challenging the current recommendations for a high carbohydrate diet, Sears looks into man's history as well as the diets athletes succeed best on, to build a new dietary picture. Anyone looking for better health through an improved relationship to what they eat should put this book on their list.
Product Description For years experts have been telling Americans what to eat and what not to eat. Fat, they told us, was the enemy. Then it was salt, then sugar, then cholesterol... and on it goes. Americans listened and they lost -- but not their excess fat. What they lost was their health and waistlines. Americans are the fattest people on earth... and why? Mainly because of the food they eat. In this scientific and revolutionary book, based on Nobel Prize-winning research, medical visionary and former Massachusetts Institute of Technology researcher Dr. Barry Sears makes peak physical and mental performance, as well as permanent fat loss, simple for you to understand and achieve. With lists of good and bad carbohydrates, easy-to-follow food blocks and delicious recipes, The Zone provides all you need to begin your journey toward permanent fat loss, great health and all-round peak performance. In balance, your body will not only burn fat, but you'll fight heart disease, diabetes, PMS, chronic fatigue, depression and cancer, as well as alleviate the painful symptoms of diseases such as multiple sclerosis and HIV. This Zone state of exceptional health is well-known to champion athletes. Your own journey toward it can begin with your next meal. You will no longer think of food as merely an item of pleasure or a means to appease hunger. Food is your medicine and your ticket to that state of ultimate body balance, strength and great health: the Zone.

Worth checking out October 12, 2009 S. Yonley (TX) I would give it 3.5 stars.
The basic idea of the book can be summed up by a recommended carb/protein/fat ratio of 40/30/30 for every meal (combined with low overall calorie intake). If you aren't comfortable with math, this means that basically, you eat equal calories of carb, protein and fat--but you can add a little extra carb.
I think that Sears is definitely onto something here, and many people will be able to easily loose weight by following the advice in this book. The real reason for the weight loss is the very low number of calories that are allowed. The reason why people might be able to not feel like they are starving on this low number of calories is because of the higher protein and fat content.
Although, the basic idea of the book seems sound, there are a lot of questions about a lot of the details. One potential problem is that for someone who doesn't want to loose weight, the low calorie count advised here may need to be revised upward. I would look to other sources regarding the mythical dangers of saturated fat and cholesterol. I would also tend to question the idea that a single diet plan is really going to be optimal for everyone--other nutrition experts (such as Dr. Mercola) believe that two people of similar body composition and activity level may have different nutritional needs. Other reviewers have questioned the scientific methodology employed by Sears (small sample sizes, etc.).
I think that most unconventional nutritional experts such as Dr. Sears and Dr. Mercola tend to be just a bit crazy. Certainly don't trust everything you read here, but I think it is an interesting book that would be helpful to a lot of people, and definitely worth checking out.

If you are more mathematically inclined (as one reviewer pointed out), you may notice that the math in the book seems rather fuzzy. For example, if you take the recommended snack consisting of:
- 1 block Protein = 7 g = 28 cal (4 cal/g x 7 g)
- 1 block Carbs = 9 g - 36 cal (4 cal/g x 9 g)
- 1 block Fat = 1.5 g - 14 cal (9 cal/g x 1.5 g)
You can easily see that this is not a 40/30/30 ratio because there is not nearly enough fat. However, if you read the potein block food choice examples, it quickly becomes obvious that the typical protein block contains some fat, so Dr. Sears makes a sneaky compromise of having very small fat blocks to compensate for the fat found in typical protein blocks. He doesn't really mention this detail, and I think he should have.
A Diet Revolution October 4, 2009 Philip Kinyanjui Mceachin (Poughkeepsie, NY) This book is important for anyone who wants to analyze their eating habits and consider whether they really are eating "healthy." Dr. Sears' work is fascinating. Good for anyone, from the sedentary individual to the elite athlete.
Zone... I'll never know September 17, 2009 J. Webb (US AB Germany) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
I still have yet to receive the book. Ordered it and paid for it, but never got it.
Best Lifestyle "Diet" Out There!! August 26, 2009 I CrossFit and I Zone...and I couldn't be happier with the outcome. This is NOT a diet...I repeat, this is NOT a diet. It is a life altering way to eat and see what the food (aka poison) you put in your body does to you. The most positive experience in all my 25 years of life : )
DIFFICULT AT FIRST, BUT ONE OF THE BEST CHANGES I HAVE EVER MADE IN MY LIFE August 24, 2009 Andrew T. Monroe I am 26 years old and started this diet at the same time as four of my friends. One thing you should know is that I was not over weight, and I am cautious about the "placebo" effect with life changes like this. I started the diet with my friends who were trying to lose weight. I started it for their support and because I thought I generally needed to start eating healthier for the long term health benefits. I have been on the Zone for 6 months now and I think I will continue to be for the rest of my life. The following are the benefits I have seen:
Weight Loss - While I lost a couple of lbs, again I was not over weight, all three of my friends saw significant weight loss. One of
them lost 18lbs in about 6 weeks. All of us now are optimal body fat percentages and have maintained that with a moderate amount of "cheating".
Engergy - I am less tired when I wake up, more focused at work, and really feel like I get the most out of everyday. I don't feel groggy all the time like I used to.
Headaches - Or lack there of rather. I used to get little headaches about once a week or so, which I always assumed were stress-induced. But in six months I have not had one headache. My friend, who seemed to get sick once all the time, has not gotten sick once since we started.
Ok this is a weird one - Farting - I don't anymore. My Sunday football games with my buddies will not be as fun anymore when we are not constantly stinking up the living room... But seriously, all of my friends and I hardly ever fart anymore, something I honestly didn't expect, but when you think about it makes a lot of sense. Digestively things seem to just operate more smoothly now.
Hunger - Once you make personal adjustments (everyone's bodies are a little different, and you have to figure out your correct ratio) you never have to be hungry. In fact, sometimes it is difficult to eat everything I am supposed to during a day. As long as you concentrate on eating favorable carbs, you NEVER have to be hungry. With that being said, this diet would be difficult for someone who doesnt like fruit and vegetables.
Sex - This may be a coincidence, but I had erectile issues for a while, and I no longer do. Take that for what you will.
Performance - I excercise and I have noticed increases in the amount of weight I can lift and decreases in times for endurance activities.
Ok, so I know that this sounds like I am describing the fountain of youth here, but please try this. This diet makes so much sense from and evolutionary standpoint. What did cavemen eat? Fruit, Veggies, Nuts, Game. Our bodies were designed over thousands of years to eat like this. It is difficult at first, but stick with it and it gets a lot easier. The best thing about it, is that you can do it 85 -90% of the time and cheat during the rest and still see great results. I eat what ever I want during my "cheat" days or meals, and it has never thrown me off track. Hope this helps!
