Amazon.com Review This 25th-anniversary edition of the classic, bestselling cookbook contains 600 heart-healthy recipes, 150 of them brand-new. The book has been updated to reflect the use of nonfat and low-fat ingredients that didn't exist just a few years ago. Recipes include appetizers, snacks, beverages, soups, salads, entrées (seafood, poultry, meat, vegetarian), vegetables, side dishes, sauces, breads, breakfasts, and, of course, desserts. Many are healthier versions of old favorites--such as Eggplant Parmesan, Chicken à la King, Sweet and Sour Pork, Spaghetti with Meat Sauce, Devil's Food Cake, and Chocolate Chip Cookies--with some new entries that reflect modern eating trends, like Portobello Mushroom Wrap with Yogurt Curry Sauce, Pad Thai, Curried Quinoa Salad with Cranberries and Almonds, and Artichoke and Chick-Pea Pilaf. Whether you want a quick meal, a nutritious dinner the whole family will enjoy, or a festive entrée to impress guests, this book has an array of choices. Most recipes reflect AHA guidelines: no more than 30 percent total fat, 8 to 10 percent saturated fat, less than 300 milligrams of cholesterol per day; plenty of vegetables and grains; and moderate sugar and sodium. Some recipes are higher in fat, but you balance those with lower-fat recipes on other days of the week. Nutritional information includes calories, protein, carbohydrates, cholesterol, fat (total, saturated, polyunsaturated, monounsaturated), fiber, and sodium. --Joan Price

Wonderfully delicious recipes and healthy to boot! November 5, 2009 Naomi (USA) When this book arrived, I spent hours looking through it and noting recipes I wanted to try. I collect cookbooks and love to cook, but unfortunately most of my recipes are not heart (or body) healthy. That's why I am so enthralled with this one. The recipes I've tried so far are fantastic. Now I can cook to my heart's delight and for my heart's health at the same time.
Ok recipes, too much processed foods November 4, 2009 Noonski (Denver, CO) There are several great recipes in this book. I bought this, and the AHA Meals in Minutes cookbook, at the same time. The disappointing aspect of the book is that many of the recipes rely on already prepard/processed foods (i.e. canned cream soup, etc...) True, the recipes call for the 'lower-sodium' version of the soups, but, to try and be healthy, eating all the chemical crud that's in these soups seems like a dumb idea. So, while there are many recipes that I'll make (modifying the recipes to use non-prepared/processed foods), I probably won't buy any more of the AHA cookbooks.
Great meals for people who enjoy their food! November 2, 2009 unhappy shopper (virginia) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I am an excellent cook and prepare a homecooked meal every evening and entertain often. The recipes I have tried...probably 12 ...have been generally excellent. We like a lot of seasoning. When the recipe has contained small amounts of hot sauce or jalapeno peppers, it has been plenty flavorful. Some of the other have required more garlic or other seasoning for our liking which is easy to adjust. Have tried a cucumber relish over baked salmon (I grilled it) which surprised me by being fabulous, a pineapple soy sauce over sesame tuna (and I had no sesame so it was grilled tuna) also excellent. Everything has been flavorful (esp once I ramp up the garlic) and excellent and easy to make. I made a pounded chicken breast with a lemon sauce...however the lemon sauce, made with the chicken bits in the pan only called for a couple of tablespoons of water and maybe one of lemon to cook down for 60 seconds to thicken. I did find that for me...it evaporated before it cooked down. Next time I am going to add a lot more seasoning to the chicken and then add more liquid to the sauce...but a higher percentage of lemon...and then will add fat free yogurt to bulk up the sauce.
I also have given this, and AHA Meals in Minutes and Olive Oil Cookbook as gifts. The recipients have also given rave reviews.
Healthy food but not bland September 24, 2009 James Anderson (Toccoa, GA) The New American Heart Association Cookbook was a pleasant surprise for both my wife and me. I had a heart attack just a couple of months ago and the doctor expressed to me the urgent need to change a diet that had caused the problem in the first place. My previous exposure to "healthy eating" was not pleasant. The food was incredibly tasteless and bland. The recipes in this cookbook are both healthy and fun to eat. I didn't even realize that was possible. The added benefit of using this book-(along with an exercise program, of course)-is that I have dropped twenty pounds in six weeks and still going. I would definitely recommend this to anybody that wants to change to a healthier diet. You don't have to have a heart attack to like this cookbook.
