This book is a Fat Vegetarians Dream but sucks for us Meat Eaters. October 12, 2009 Wade A. Alderson (Claremore, Ok USA) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I am sure Dr. Neal Barnard Md. is a very nice person and really wants to help someone. But his book comes across as someone on a crusade for vegetarianism. In the example he tells of how great an all vegi life is and how screwed up and terrible your life is as a meat eater. And then his examples for the meat eaters is always the same... "Joe Blow hated the diet... but after starting it he quit his evil ways and lost 50 lbs over 50 weeks." (I'm paraphrasing... that is not a real example). That's crap! Anyone can lose a pound a week by just waling for 20 minutes to an hour more every day. Maybe even more than a pound a week if they walked the whole hour.
The very best part of this book is on page 21 "The 20 foods you can eat in virtually unlimited portions" that works for everyone... but any google search for "Negative Calorie Food" will give you an ever greater list without all the hype about how evil meat is.
I really wanted to believe in this book... I would have even recommended it if the Good Dr. had said... "Hey... if you eat meat... eat this way for 4 days, take 2 days to eat healthy meals with meat, and then do the 4 days on, 2 days off... for the rest of your life." and I think anyone who understands the bodies ability to adapt will understand why that would work.
But Dr. Neal is on such a crusade he can't even see outside his garden patch.
I give this book 2 stars because the science is sound, the idea will work... but the rhetoric is so off putting I can't even recommend this to my friends.
Hype. No more. May 31, 2009 Jetendra S. Dublish (USA) I read the book. I was not impressed. There isn't really anything useful in the book that isn't commonly available info online.
Most of the book is menus ...
Does more harm than good for some of us July 21, 2008 Anne Kathleen (In front of my Mac, United States) 3 out of 6 found this review helpful
I am already on a lean protein and vegetable diet. I was given this book, and started to read it. I stopped reading it and put it in the yard sale pile when I got to page 18, where Dr Bernard stated emphatically, "carbohydrates boost your metabolism."
I am one of those people that carbohydrates have the opposite effect on me, especially those found in grains, pastas and rice. Instead of boosting my metabolism, these carbohydrates bring it to a standstill. When I eat carbs, I feel bloated and lethargic, NOT energetic. If I were to do as he suggests and eat loads of pasta, rice, baked potatoes, etc., I'd end up weighing twice what I do now.
Be warned that a high carb diet may work for some - even most people - but for those of you who DON'T feel like running a marathon after eating a plate load of pasta, avoid this book at all costs and grab a copy of The South Beach Diet instead.
Excellent Amazon service, but poor book February 5, 2008 N. A. Torres (Sao Paulo, SP Brazil) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
The book is something interesting, but with no novelty at all. Some old ideas are presented, and there is no data assuring what the author suggests.
Not true. Results are subject to your body type February 3, 2008 P.M. 6 out of 8 found this review helpful
I was excercising and following a protein based + minumum carbs diet. My goal was to reduce fat and cholesterol. I read this book and decided to give it a try.
1.- If you are planning to become a vegan this may work for you.
2.- Even though carbos have no fat, your body converts carbs into sugar for energy and sugar becomes fat.
I gain back 2 pounds in a week! Not only that but I grew back 2.5 inches of belly!!
Carbos have been always a problem for me. They surely store in my belly. I was excercising at the time I tried this diet. I was at the gym 3 times a week for at least one hour.
This messed up my fitness program big time. I had to started all over again.
I know some people that had become skinny with this program but MAKE SURE YOUR BODY TYPE will respond to this program before you start. You may be dissapointed. Check with your doctor.
