Product Description The large numbers of Americans currently supplementing their regimen with various vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients continues to need a reliable, research-based source of information on these supplements. Now in its second edition, the PDR® for Nutritional Supplements maintains its status as a concise yet, comprehensive resource of the entire spectrum of current nutritional products. Updated and now including a new section on functional foods and drinks, the PDR® for Nutritional Supplements 2nd edition condenses the chemical nature of the supplement, claims made for it, laboratory animal and human research, risks and precautions and doses. Along with various useful indexes, each supplement monograph (arranged alphabetically by supplement name) contains information specific to:
trade names supplement description and pharmacology indications and usage contraindications and precautions possible adverse reactions over dosage, dosage and administration how supplied (liquid, caplet, etc.).
Claims proven, not proven, and disproved are summarized. The PDR® for Nutritional Supplements 2nd edition also has a brief list of common laboratory test values, directories of poison control centers, drug information centers, and U.S. Food and Drug Administration telephone services. Written by a physician with a Ph.D. in biochemistry and molecular biology, and a science and medicine reporter for Time magazine, the second edition of PDR® for Nutritional Supplements fills a gap in reference collections for all meaningful nutritional supplements and functional food and drink.
Those seeking objective, scientific information about nutritional supplements will find it in the newest addition to the PDR family.

Smoke Out the Snake Oil Salesmen June 28, 2009 S. Forbis 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I use this book to keep myself ahead of the often suspect claims made for various ingredients in food products, pills, extracts and compounds either marketed by profiteers or pushed by gushing magazine articles and on TV, radio and the web. We are bombarded with this kind information just about every day and this book offers the kind of reality check one needs to separate truth from fiction.
Just one recent example would be the claims I have been hearing 10 times a day on talk radio for a product called Super Beta Prostate. The PDR tells me that while evidence points to some real relief of symptoms of an enlarged prostate, potential side effects indicate that consultation with a physician is in order. Most tellingly the dosage of the main active ingredient, beta-sistosterol, is twice the maximum dosage in common use by doctors in Europe. This would make it doubly important - literally - to check with your doctor.
I have yet to find anything that has come up in the news like resveratrol, lycopene, anti-oxidants, etc., that is not covered in staggering detail in the pages of this book.
Insightful. Intelligent. Informative. Succinct. May 4, 2009 Morgan Ervin (Vancouver, B.C. Canada) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Thank you Dr. Hendler for a great book. I have been a raw food vegan for a number of years and use supplements with my diet for complete nutrition. I have searched for a book that is both unbiased, intelligent and well-researched and have finally found that in this latest release of the PDR. As someone with an "alternative" diet, I frequently find articles and books that are both biased and poorly researched on many of the supplements that I have wanted to include in my diet. I have been left to wonder if a new $150.00 supplement is right for me, or right for anyone for that matter. Dr. Hendler's book has given me a great set of tools that are evidence-based and easy to understand. For anyone concerned with nutrition, this book is a must have, and for anyone who knows someone who enjoys supplements, this book would be the best gift EVER. To Dr. Hendler and Mr. Rorvic, thanks for writing this invaluable book!
Invaluable asset for our nation's health April 12, 2009 Paula Beerman (San Diego, CA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Dr. Hendler has written a fantastic follow-up to the first edition of the PDR for nutritional supplements. The second edition is a book that every doctor should have and a book that the general population could just as easily follow. I recommend it for everyone and anyone!
Dr. Hendler clearly illustrates each vitamin and mineral in complete detail, with a compilation of the most up-to-date research being conducted up to 2008. From an epidemiological perspective, including optimal levels of the vitamins discussed in this book could easily prevent most chronic diseases that inflict us today. Dr. Hendler discusses the types of foods that contain these vitamins and how our bodies use these vitamins. Public health advocates tell us to eat our fruits and vegetables on a daily basis, but Dr. Hendler tells us what's inside of these healthy foods that makes it so worthwhile. Thank you so much Dr. Hendler for this important guide to better improving the public's health. May Vitamin D continue to shine down on you and all the important work that you do day after day, year after year!
finally an encyclopedic resource April 9, 2009 frances fairbanks (larchmont, ny United States) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This book is the only authoritative bible on the subject of nutritional supplements and could only have been written by Sheldon Hendler, Ph.D, M.D., whose knowledge is unparalled in this field. Physicians and consumers alike do not understand the various components of nutritional supplements, when they should be used, for which conditions and when they should not. In this society, where nutritional supplementation is so widespread, both doctors and patients need to be thoroughly knowledgeable. Dr. Hendler's book belongs on the shelves of physicians, nutritionists, and those of us who take vitamins.
Remarkable March 6, 2009 C. Lewis 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Whether you are scientifically savvy or just have an interest in health, the PDR for Nutritional Supplements, 2nd Edition, is a "must-have" addition to your library. For a thorough overview of the myriad of claims surrounding nutritional supplements and functional foods, there is no comparable reference. Dr. Hendler undertakes a meticulous review of the existing literature, distills fact from fiction, and concludes with a concise analysis of claims that can be scientifically validated and those that cannot. Its scope and clarity make this work masterful. If you are taking dietary supplements, or making dietary decisions based on claims about nutritional benefits, do yourself a favor and get this book.
