Disappointing recipes :( November 7, 2009 A. Decker (Montreal, CA) I'm not a vegan (yet) but I am trying REALLY hard to be one. I love butter, eggs, and anything that's baked using them.
After the great reviews I've been reading about this book, I thought it was worth trying their recipes.
I've done 3 so far (+2 of frosting) and sadly I've been a little disappointed. Both versions of the "yellow vanilla cupcakes" did not taste great and were too "muffiny" in texture. The peanut butter cupcakes were OK for me, but everyone else that tried them did not like them (the texture was fine though). I think maybe they're too "molassy".... I don't know.
The "to-go" buttercream was also not good. The only thing that I LOVED and plan on keeping was the "chocolate mousse" frosting. I DO NOT like "buttercream" frostings in general and this was is just really good. For the price of the book (around $10) I think the book was worth it because of this recipe and because it's really made me think of alternatives to doing vegan baked goods.
I will continue trying recipes from the book and I hope I'll be rewriting this review with more positive notes!
tasty! October 28, 2009 A. Ko (Houston, Tx) The GOOD:
- these cupcakes are tasty. i made the peanut butter cupcakes and gobble gobble we ate them in less than 24 hours. yes, that is how my family rolls. we just cannot help ourselves. i use almond milk because i cannot have soy milk or milk milk currently. cupcakes still turn out great. i have not tried too many of the recipes though, but i am still glad i bought this book.
The BAD:
- a lot of the recipes call for soy yogurt. i tasted it and soy yogurt tastes awful. i guess the cupcakes may still turn out okay but i could not try it because it ended up making my baby gassy in the worst way. sigh. so if you are allergic to soy and milk, don't get this book.
The UGLY:
- well my main complaint or rather, what i like least about this book that i actually like A LOT, is that a lot of the recipes ask for soy margarine and shortening. i only cook with butter or oils because margarine and shortening still gross me out. i would like this cookbook to offer an oil alternative since they obviously will not use butter. i like baking with oils because baked goods seem to remain more moist for longer.
OVERALL:
- i still love this book. i like the way the recipes are laid out, i like the pictures, i am able to substitute real butter for shortening or what not when it asks for it ( i think i have done this already...sorry i'm a tired mom and cannot remember :P ) this is a great buy! book is well-priced to just buy it anyways.
Changed my baking forever! October 21, 2009 Zora (AZ) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This review is a long time coming since I have had this book for sometime now. This is a must have for anyone interested in taking their vegan baking to the next level as well as any beginner who is looking for the basics. I love this book, I use the techniques all the time and am so grateful that I found it (and so is everyone else who gets to it my cupcakes)!
Question - Not a Review October 20, 2009 C. Sullivan-Brown (Renton, WA Etats-Unis) 0 out of 4 found this review helpful
Although these are vegan cupcakes, are they wheat/gluten free, too? Thank you to future reviewers or other reviewers who include this information.
The best cupcakes I've ever had!!! October 15, 2009 A. Vily I would just like to say that this is by far the best cupcake recipe book out there. I purchased this book in preparation for my daughter's 1st bday and thus far, my cupcakes have turned exceptionally delicious, fluffy, and moist. Baking these cupcakes makes me want to open a vegan cupcake shop.
