Product Description
Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease challenges conventional cardiology by posing a compelling, revolutionary idea-that we can, in fact, abolish the heart disease epidemic in this country by changing our diets. Drawing on the groundbreaking results of his twenty-year nutritional study, Dr. Caldwell B. Esselstyn, Jr., a former surgeon, researcher, and clinician at the Cleveland Clinic, convincingly argues that a plant-based, oil-free diet can not only prevent and stop the progression of heart disease, but also reverse its effects. Furthermore, it can eliminate the need for expensive and invasive surgical interventions, such as bypass and stents, no matter how far the disease has progressed. Dr. Esselstyn began his research with a group of patients who joined his study after traditional medical procedures to treat their advanced heart disease had failed. Within months of following a plant-based, oil-free diet, their angina symptoms eased, their cholesterol levels dropped significantly, and they experienced a marked improvement in blood flow to the heart. Twenty years later, the majority of Dr. Esselstyn's patients continue to follow his program and remain heart-attack proof.

Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease explains the science behind these dramatic results, and offers readers the same simple, nutrition-based plan that has changed the lives of his patients forever. In addition, Dr. Esselstyn provides more than 150 delicious recipes that he and his wife, Ann Crile Esselstyn, have enjoyed for years and used with their patients. Clearly written and backed by irrefutable scientific evidence, startling photos of angiograms, and inspiring personal stories, Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease will empower readers to take charge of their heart health. It is a powerful call for a paradigm shift in heart-disease therapy.

5 out of 5 stars Thank you, Dr. Esselstyn   November 17, 2009

I first read about Dr. Esselstyn's work in The China Study: The Most Comprehensive Study of Nutrition Ever Conducted and the Startling Implications for Diet, Weight Loss and Long-term Health, another great book that talks a lot about heart disease. I had been reading books that recommended high protein diets, many supplements, weight lifting and cardio to improve fitness and health in general. I started to get chest pains if I exercised very much. Over the months there was less and less that I could do without getting chest pain. The good effects of exercise were no match for the bad effects of high animal protein. My doctor said that I might need a stent. I don't like operations so tried the foods that Dr. Esselstyn recommends, and took something to lower cholesterol. Within a few weeks chest pain improved and after almost a year I could do the exercise I used to do again.

5 out of 5 stars Drop Your Blood Pressure   November 14, 2009

Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease: The Revolutionary, Scientifically Proven, Nutrition-Based Cure
This book was very helpful in convincing me and my household to switch from an omnivore diet to a vegan diet. The health claims for a vegan diet are startling but documented. Since my family has a history of heart disease, I was especially struck by the studies showing that heart disease can not only be stopped, but even reversed by changing from a diet based on animal foods to a vegan plant-based whole food diet. I myself have been on blood pressure and cholesterol medication for years. In the two months since we switched to a vegan diet I have lost eight pounds (although I am making no effort to limit my food intake), and my blood pressure has dropped by about 20 points (about 15%-20%). It may be that I will be able to go off my bp medication soon, or at least reduce it. I have not yet had my cholesterol levels checked since the diet change but I am eager to find out if they too have dropped. A highly recommended book for anyone who is ready for a healthy diet that does not involve starving yourself.

5 out of 5 stars I have seen the light!   October 25, 2009

I am so excited about Dr. Esselstyn's book, including Ann Crile Esselstyn's wonderful and easy recipes, that I feel a bit like a religious fanatic.

The book is highly persuasive. The recipes, which are easy and delicious, make it easy to follow Dr. E's recommendations. (The China Study, by T. Colin Campbell, provides the backup data for the benefits of this type of diet.)

I'm not a perfectionist, but I don't use dairy or oil anymore. At most restaurants, you can get balsamic vinegar or rice vinegar or regular vinegar and add some pepper or mustard for your salad dressing. I often heat my veggies in ready made (preferably organic) vegetable soups, like curried lentil, black bean, or butternut squash, to mention a few. If you cook a big portobello mushroom and season it with a bit of steak seasoning, it is as satisfying on a bun as hamburger - only better!

I feel great. Not only did I lose quite a bit of weight (still have a bit more to go), but I've been very healthy. I won't go back to dairy, oil, meat.

Read these books. Try the recipes. Live a healthy life.

5 out of 5 stars You can save your life   October 17, 2009

Let me repeat Professor T.Colin Campbell's words: "One of the most outstanding projects in health research of the past century. It's relevant, it's caring, it's innovative, it's extremely well executed and it's very, very useful. -- T. Colin Campbell, Ph.D., author of The China Study,"
and add my opinion to it:
This book can save your life. Not only is it fascinating for the scientifically interested, but also extremely practical; apply its recommendations to your life and you can dramatically reduce your cholesterol level, eliminate the plaques etc.,and, indeed, save your life--and enjoy yourself in the process. Many of the easy-to-make recipes in the book are now a staple in my family's diet.--
