When your child isn't sleeping, chances are that you aren't either. Solve Your Child's Sleep Problems--a tired parent's essential for more than 10 years--offers valuable advice and concrete help when lullabies aren't enough to lull your child into dreamland. Based on Ferber's research as the director of Boston's Center for Pediatric Sleep Disorders at Children's Hospital, the book is a practical, easy-to-understand guide to common sleeping problems for children ages one to six. Detailed case histories on night waking, difficulty sleeping, and more serious disorders such as sleep apnea and sleepwalking help illustrate a wide variety of problems and their solutions. New parents will benefit from Ferber's proactive advice on developing good sleeping patterns and daily schedules to ensure that sleeping problems don't develop in the first place. You'll also find a bibliography of children's books on bedtime, sleep, and dreaming, as well as a list of helpful organizations. Here's a book that is sure to put you and your whole family to sleep--in this case, that's a good thing.

5 out of 5 stars Very effective   October 29, 2009

I got this book to solve my 18-month-old's sleep problems. It took only 4 nights of crying and they were not unbearable either. The best part is that his quality of sleep has improved: before, he would wake up several times a night crying and now he does not wake up at all, and he is more fresh in the morning and not tired during the day.

5 out of 5 stars Night #3 - HE SLEPT THROUGH THE NIGHT!!!!   September 21, 2009
G. Kwan
I was skeptical but desperate. After 5 months of getting up 4-7 times a night to feed or rock my baby back to sleep I finally had to get some help to save my sanity. I was sure that I had the worse sleeper who since birth had slept no longer than 4 hours at a stretch and at that only a handful of times, who at times would take up to 2 hours to put back down at night even after a feeding. During the day I was so desperate for him to sleep that I would allow him to sleep on my nursing pillow. We went to a pediatrician desperate for some ideas to help my baby sleep better and nap better. The doctor recommended this book and I went out and bought that day.

Night #1 - (3-5-10min intervals with 1-2 mins to check on baby without picking him up) 820pm put down in crib awake but groggy, 9pm asleep. 5 hours later (a record!!!!)... 2am wake up - feed put down in bed still awake. 3 min cry, 2 min to check, 2mins later he's asleep. 4am wake up - 3min, 5min, 10min, 10min with 2 min checks. 45 mins to fall asleep. Up at 7:02 am and happy.

Night #2 (5-10-12) - 7pm asleep with in 15 mins, midnight feed and back to sleep within 3 mins. 4am wake up an hour and a half later finally asleep. (This was difficult). 8am had to be woken up. According to book you should not let them sleep past their regular wake up time which for my baby was 7am but I was just too tired so I let him sleep the extra hour.

Night #3 (10-12-15) - 645pm asleep with less than a minute of fussing, 1030pm feeding, up at 630am with no fussing or crying through out the night. HE SLEPT THROUGH THE NIGHT!!!!!

Nap time has also been easy following the method in the book. The first day he cried almost 30mins before going down for his nap but after 3 days he practically lets me know when he's ready to nap and goes down with no fussing at all.

I feel like a whole different person and can now enjoy my baby. This method is not for everyone and initially I did not think I could do it either but it works and my baby is a happier and more rested baby.

As a first time mom I got into the habit of nursing or rocking my baby to sleep and once asleep I would then put him into his crib. This of course caused him to wake up startled to find himself in a different environment then when he fell asleep and thus he could not return back to sleep unless he was nursed or rocked which created a cycle that was hard to break. Ferber explains that if baby is put into his crib awake he will wake up in the same environment that he fell asleep in and thus will not be shocked and can then soothe himself back to sleep. It really works. My baby now knows that his crib is for sleeping and he sleeps very well. Even his naps are longer, he went from 40 min. naps to 60-90 min. naps. I highly recommend this book to every parent who has a problem sleeper and who is desperate to finally get some sleep.

5 out of 5 stars Worked for us - Thank Goodness!   September 15, 2009

I had read the Weissbluth book, and the Pantley "No Cry Sleep Solution" but our 9 month old was still not sleeping through the night. Ferber did it for us, so this book gets 5 stars from me. I know that this one method may not work for everyone, but the book is worth reading if your child has sleeping issues, even if you decide not to CIO. Ferber talks about the need for good sleep, and sleep habits.

Like others, I was definitely concerned that CIO would change my otherwise happy baby's personality, and it was a last resort for us. But, we are so glad that we tried it. Our son is 15 months old now, and it helped preserve our family harmony. We have slipped back into old habits a few times, and had to re-Ferberize two or three times. But, the re-Ferberizing isn't as tough as the first time.

Definitely worth reading for any parent having difficulty in this arena. Like I said, you don't have to follow it, but at least it will give you some insight in what could be going on. It's a pretty easy read, even if you're feeling sleep-deprived!

Best wishes to all you parents out there!

3 out of 5 stars This book isn't for everybody   September 8, 2009

As the mother of a baby who was very fussy and a terrible sleeper, I bought this book out of desperation. While it does an admirable job explaining what is known about sleep and describing some more esoteric sleep problems, it didn't give much guidance at all for a mother of a sleepless newborn/young infant. If you have a sleepless newborn or infant like I did, do yourself a favor and buy "The 90-minute Sleep Solution" by Polly Moore, PhD. She is a sleep researcher and a mom, and her book is the only one that presents a clear plan that will absolutely work. Her plan works because it is based on recognizing and using the biological clock that all babies have. At 3 months of age my baby was sleeping 9-12 hours a day, woke up constantly all night long, took almost no naps and was a screaming mess. Now, after consistently following Dr. Moore's plan, he is sleeping 14+ hours a day, waking only 1-2 times a night to feed, napping beautifully and consistently and best of all is calm and happy when he's awake. Life is sooooo much easier now. And this wasn't magic, it was a good plan.
