Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
The book for every woman who can't leave home without her lipstick.

What is it about lipstick? It appears on the counters of drug and department stores with the come-hither wink of candy and chocolate. There's something about the way it looks and feels. There's a ritual to putting it on. It's like a drug. An instant fix for sex appeal and glamour. It's a bite-sized magic wand.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book for Lipstick-ophiles!   April 4, 2006
7 out of 8 found this review helpful

This book is funny, well-written, and full of lipstick info. It includes recipes for making your own lipstick, as well as the psychology of lipstick, and even some lipstick-name haiku! The most extensive and entertaining book about lipstick ever in print.

5 out of 5 stars Captivating and Entertaining   June 27, 2005

This book provides rare insight into the way women feel, and the thought and study they put into enhancing their appearance and making themselves more attractive. I bought this book for my aunt, but read it first because it was so entertaining and captivating. It is distinguished by its witty, sharp writing. "Lipstick" combines a history of the evolution of makeup with sentiment, analysis, and practical advice on buying cosmetics.

3 out of 5 stars My friend Sarah has this book.   May 10, 2004

My friend Sarah got this book as a gift from her Aunt Wendy, who also likes to send books about serial killers, and pictures of other people's dead cats. I flipped through it when I was staying at her house in Baltimore a few month's ago. I really like Baltimore.
The book seemed good, but not as good as the one Aunt Wendy sent about vampires.

5 out of 5 stars Valentines Day Favorite!!!   January 30, 2004

I've been giving this book for a Valentines Day gift and a Mothers Day gift for a few years, and it is always a hit. The book hits all the buttons-- sentimental, erotic, exotic, hot topics! Both very funny and very informative-- and tried and true lipstickians (like Mom) feel sentimental and knowing towards the information, and the Valentiners get all fired up by all the info and quotes on red and the mouth and the sex of the stick of a lipstick!!

5 out of 5 stars Not your ordinary makeup book!!   April 3, 2003

I was really surprised at how witty and informative this book was. I just loved reading about the evolution of makeup through the ages. I am so glad we have it so easy. Our toughest choices are to decide what brand of lipstick to buy and what color to wear. Just thinking about those poor women in the middle ages that used everything from pig brain and wolf blood as skincare potions. If I had to crush ant eggs as kohl for eyeliner like the Egyptians did, I'd just wear a paper bag over my head.

The history lesson isn't the only interesting part of this book. There is also the section on "Lipstick Freud," which tries to analyze what your lipstick says about you. Who would have thought lipstick would be so deep?

The section about dealing with pushy and "evil" makeup salespeople is definitely a valuable tool. I can't count how many times I was bullied into buying a cosmetic that I wasn't quite sure about.

If you love lipstick, get this book. If you love a good history lesson, get this book. In other words, it is worth the money. I am glad I took the chance!
