5 out of 5 stars Wake-up call!   November 28, 2008

I borrowed this book from a co-worker because I didn't want to snark it without reading it. Yes, my intentions were wholly bad.
Instead, I was spurred to do some research on factory slaughterhouses, the FDA, and the USDA, and I was shocked into a mostly vegan diet. I say 'mostly' because if I ever have the opportunity to eat one of my (geographically distant) friend's pampered chickens, raised from chicks on her small family farm with love, fed pure organic feed, and killed as humanely as possible, I will probably do so, if the killin' doesn't freak me out (it's easier to eat 'chicken' than 'pretty white hen I just fed from my own hand while little yellow chicks scurried around'). But since a similar opportunity will never present itself within 1000 miles of my home, I will abstain from all other animal products, even if I can't call myself a 'vegan'.
Since adopting this lifestyle, I've kicked my sugar addiction, am sleeping without wine or pills (Benadryl, not barbituates...this ain't Valley of the Dolls!), have more energy, clear skin, and am eating better than ever before. I've been steadily losing the twenty-five pounds I'd gained over the last two years while never feeling hungry or deprived. When I cleaned out my pantry and refrigerator, I was stunned to find that most of my food was vegan. I quit dairy long ago due to allergies, so in addition to some beef and chicken broth, the only non-vegan thing I had to pitch was some instant oatmeal that contained casein. It's easier than you might think.
Skinny Bitch does use some silly science, which I disregarded. But the chapter You Are What You Eat provides some compelling evidence of the cruelty and revolting sanitation practices present in factory farms and slaughterhouses. If you have been on the fence about eating meat, this chapter alone will push you towards vegetarianism or veganism. If you want to keep eating meat and dairy, it may push you to become extremely selective about where you obtain your meat and dairy, which may dramatically limit your consumption.
All in all, an easy, informative read. I wasn't offended by the profanity or casual writing style; I find a lot of vegan-focused writing to be preachy or insufferably hippie-fied, so this was a refreshing change.

5 out of 5 stars a life-changer   November 27, 2008

Read the book and laughed out loud.
Cried at the horrible parts.
Finished the book on July 4 2008.
Tried to eat a cheeseburger that night, but couldn't finish it.
Decided that night to go vegan.
Cleaned out cupboards and freezer on July 5 2008.
Went grocery shopping, it took me 4 hours.
Much faster at it now, and spend less money.
Fast forward 4 months.
2 pant sizes smaller.
smooth, clear skin.
Energy.
Happier.
Glass is half-full now.
Never in my life has a single book had so much impact.
Thank you Kim and Rory.
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

5 out of 5 stars Never looked or felt better   November 25, 2008

I read this book while eating a Whopper - it was my last one. But BK makes a mean veggie burger. I follow this book in a realistic way for me.. I don't eat meat, I do eat fish, I avoid soda, milk and eggs- but lets get real here when I eat a cupcake I know that milk and eggs went into it. Either way I lost 30 lbs in 8 months and other than going cold turkey on the meat, I didn't radically change the way I ate - I was more aware of what I was eating and I made better choices. I love this book, it takes away your own excuses, you cannot rationalize eating 'one more hotdog' when you are now aware of everything that went into it. I give it an A+

I really dislike this book.

Their language is horrible; they use as many swear words as possible for shock value. Their grammar is terrible. Did anyone edit this thing? I was incredibly turned off by the writing style and tone of the book.

If you can get past the language, most of the information presented is off mark or just plain wrong. The majority of the "scientific" information is not backed up by citations or references.

It's presented as a healthy diet book but the real motive is to convince you to become a vegan. It's a very unpalatable piece of propaganda.

2 out of 5 stars Perfect book for the gullible girl.   November 18, 2008

OMG--I had to read this book after seeing my SIL become a vegan overnight and lose a ton of weight. If you like being made to feel like an idiot, and can tolerate profane words being tossed at you like the salads these two ladies live on--then buy this book!! It basically goes over all the common sense ways we should be eating and basically makes you feel like a second-class-citizen if you choose to eat any meat product. BE WARNED: If you will not even consider the possibility of being a vegan, than this book is NOT for you--it goes into some pretty graphic banter about how animals are treated in a slaughterhouse (any animal advocate already knows this stuff)--I thought the book to be a waste of my reading time and intellegence. I'll stick with my "common sense" diet which is minimal processed/fried/junk foods and more all natural foods--see I just saved you around $15.00!!! LOL
