Amazon.com Review The faces that Kevyn Aucoin has made are stellar and luminous: Cher, Tina Turner, Vanessa Williams, and Julia Roberts are but a few of the stars in Aucoin's galaxy of clientele. More than making do, making up is the art of achieving your own special look, and Aucoin insists that there are no hard and fast rules--except for the obvious ones, such as "Don't put lipstick in your eye." The first section offers, in his own words, Aucoin's favorite ideas, tricks, and techniques for enhancing, defining, and altering facial features with makeup. You'll learn how to care for your skin, what foundation to use with your skin type, and transformational magic for that central player in the drama of beauty: eyes. Through his gallery of noncelebrity before-and-afters, Aucoin shows clearly how to use his fundamentals to achieve dozens of different looks. The gorgeous final chapter reads like a list of exotic characters in a play--the Vamp, the Siren, the Diva.... In fact, such celebrities as Isabella Rosselini, Demi Moore, and Nicole Kidman pose as these dramatic, splendidly made-up characters. These sumptuous photographs are accompanied by full-page illustrations listing the "ingredients" required to create these looks as well as simple directions for achieving them. The introduction by the author, at once amusing and endearing ("...trying to conceal the fact that I was a gay, effeminate, hyperactive, adopted child with a serious lisp in southern Louisiana would have been like trying to hide Dolly Parton in a string bikini!"), and Aucoin's commentary throughout, makes Making Faces a unique reference book--beautiful, informative, and personal.
Product Description In a book that features 60 instructional watercolor sketches and step-by-step recipes for dozens of different looks, the world's most renowned makeup artist shares his makeup secrets with women everywhere. 240 color photos.

interesting but outdated - came out in '97 December 29, 2008 bored99 (Hamden, CT USA) This book includes styles for both supermodels and average-looking people. However it was published more than a decade ago (copyright '97) and styles have changed since then. This is most notable in the use of "outlined" lips or super-dark lipstick on about 90% of the photos in the book. The "edgy" pictures are even more dramatic and outdated. All in all, an interesting book, but not very usable for makeup tips in '08.
It`s awesome! December 28, 2008 Marlena (Las Vegas, NV) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I just look through the book, because I`m finishing reading Voque Make Up, and it`s a bomb! It`s very easy to read, all the tips are highlighted in the ovals for quick come back. Also I loved the makeovers with the picture before and after. What I found useful was a full characteristics of the make up from different decades; I knew the look and now I know how to achieve it. Awesome and highly recommended! (Much better then Voque Make up).
Very Good Book! December 18, 2008 L. M. Kesh (Pennsylvania) Making faces was an excellent book for make-up tips. The best part about the book for me was the picture of where to highlight and low-light facial features (such as low-lighting the sides of the nose and highlighting the forehead and bridge of the nose). The book is very straight forward, to the point, and does not contain any of the "fluff" that many other make-up artists use to fill up their books. There are also a lot of makeovers to try for everyday and for special occasions. It is a wonderful step-by-step guide for a beginner and for an advanced make-up user and I highly recommend purchasing this book!
For anyone who loves the art of makeup! December 16, 2008 Clotilde Pereira (Brazil) I've bought this book for my daughter for Christmas. I'm sure she will love it. I was afraid it wouldn't arrive in time, but I received the book only 10 days after purchasing. Thank you very much, Amazon, for the fast delivery!
This is the Bible For Beauty! December 4, 2008 James V. Shrode (Philly) You need this book! It is a bible to make-up artists, drag queens and anyone who wants to know how to put on make-up. everything is covered and explained from the tools you need, the make-up types and plenty of classic looks along with beautiful theme looks. Everything is laid out and made simple with diagrams and easy to follow instructions. Sit down with your make-up, a jar of remover and practice and follow. You'll become quite practiced.
