This is a great book! Not the usual book of pics of techs.Sensi beng one of the later desciples of O sensi Ueshiba and careing for him, has given Saotome sensi a more spiritual perspective on the art of peace. This also shows in his dojos as well. There is a good combination of graphics and info for the courious or the seasoned student.Dont miss this book.
A must have for Aikido students August 27, 2000 Massimo Maddaloni (Bozeman, MT United States) 3 out of 8 found this review helpful
All in all this is a great book and, as I stated in the title, it is a must have for aikido students. However, in my personal opinion, it could have been written in half of the pages. Lecturing about the "obvious" connections between molecular biology-quantum physics-Aikido-cosmology-planet management sounds ... well, actually, it does NOT sound to tell you the truth. On the other hand, lecturing about the real meaning of budo is very good. Many concepts here explained are deep. Although it is not a technical manual, the notes about the spirit behind some basic techniques are really interesting.
An Inspiration July 2, 2000 3 out of 6 found this review helpful
This book is gold. Saotome sensei's explanations state the ideas of the Founder in such clearity that even I could understand them. This is a great book, not only for practitioners of Aikido, but for all martial artists and just everyone in general. The messages in this book show us that the world could be more peaceful if we just tried to understand each other.
A one of a kind book ! September 2, 1998 Ubaldo (Brazil) 21 out of 22 found this review helpful
Saotome Shihan(one that is worthy to be followed) has written a very distintive and uncommon book. There is nothing about technique or fighting ways. The book is concerned with the spiritual side of Aikido and the importance of becoming a better person through its practice. That does not mean that Saotome Shihan is one of those dreamy-eyed, "new-age" people...He talks straight and proposes many ideas full of common sense. The book also is full of his fond memories of Ueshiba Sensei(founder of Aikido)and gives sound advice on how to improve our lives. All in all, a one of a kind book. You must have it in your martial arts library !
