5 out of 5 stars Chelsea, on the rocks.   May 19, 2008
J. Parker Switzer (New York, NY)
Tighter, funnier and much more polished than her first book, Chelsea is coming into her own. She deserves more exposure than she gets on her little 'not so real' E Entertainment show. Genuinely and spontaneously funny, she's the kind of girl you just want to grab a bottle of Grey Goose and hang out with and have her tell you these stories on her own. Often a laugh out loud-worthy read.

3 out of 5 stars For A Collection of Humor Essays, Not Bad   May 19, 2008
L. Berk (Praha, CR)
Admittedly, I don't usually read books like this, but found "Are You There, Vodka? It's Me, Chelsea" to be an overall entertaining collection. The first four essays were, far and away, the 'best' in the collection. Until reading this book, I had no familiarity with Handler, but would certainly turn to her other book were I looking for something light and easy-to-read.

I found "Are You There..." to be somewhat underwhelming and inconsistently hilarious. Admittedly, the parts that were funny really were fantastic. However, Chelsea Handler glosses over and re-arranges life events in order to align them just so - and thusly make whatever anecdote she's recounting work like one of her performance jokes.

Everything works just a little *too* well for these to be legitimate essays. Rather, the book reads like an ongoing stand-up routine with more detail added.

Overall, it's a good effort: Handler isn't the best writer (and is occasionally downright dismal), but her stories are generally amusing.

2 out of 5 stars She's Pretty Funny...This Book is Not.   May 17, 2008

Pretty disappointing, but it's obvious that many of her fans will lap up whatever she writes, so I'm sure it will make her some money.

Detailed conversations she had when she was nine, where she and her third-grade friend talk like miniature adults...well, that just doesn't quite ring true, does it? Most of the book has clearly been embellished--and not in a particularly funny way. Save your money.

2 out of 5 stars Really not all that funny   May 17, 2008
Kiefer (The Great Northeast)
I went into this book with the best intentions. I had read an interview with Chelsea as well as the glowing reviews in many magazines and, I must confess, I found the title hysterical. I was disappointed that the title was really the only laugh out loud funny part of the whole book. I had the time to read the whole collection in one sitting and barely cracked a smile. I agree with the reviewer who likened the stories to the popular girl prattling on to anyone who'll listen-you're enraptured by their presence but, in giving it any thought, they would just be too exhausting to be around. The story about Aubrey was particularly ironic, seeing a large part of Handler's stories deal with the lies she's told people. The story about the airport pickup was pointless really and most of the other stories are about being drunk, hungover or talking about how fat her father is. Not really what I expected.

I loved this book! I would agree that it is not as good as her first one, but I still laughed my butt off! I am a huge Chelsea Handler fan and I think she is an amazing women. Get this book!!
