Thinking eats February 9, 2008 Susanne Walker (North Adams, MA) This is a good and thoughtful follow-up to "The Omnivore's Dilemma", Pollan's just previous book. The information and his thinking about it offer good resource in not only leading a better eating life, but increasing awareness of living in general. Everything he writes is well done, smart and witty--I find Pollan always a thouroughly enjoyable and helpful read.
Did It & Lost 25 Lbs! February 9, 2008 Katsumushi (New England, USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
January '07, after reading Pollan's "Unhappy Meals" article in the NY Times, I set to work doing what he said; "Eat Food, not too much, mostly plants." In 6 months, I lost 25 previously intractable pounds without EVER being hungry and was mercifully able to give up "senseless exercise" like jogging. I will admit it takes the first month and some serious willpower to defeat the cravings for the stuff that's been industrially engineered to be addictive. But then ALL the cravings are GONE, and you have MUCH more energy at a much higher level than ever before. What a nice sustainable way to get from Size 14 to Size 8 jeans! :) BUY THE BOOK, CHANGE YOUR LIFE. It IS a Manifesto--Send Big Ag to the toxic waste dump of history, where it belongs! I'd love to see Pollan take on Big Pharma next.
Finally, a "diet" book that makes sense February 8, 2008 J. Golden (West Hartford, CT USA) While "In Defense of Food" is not a diet book per se, it certainly encourages one to change their eating habits. Using a common sense approach, Michael Pollan explains what nutritionists and food scientists have done to ruin our health. In the rush to reduce the costs of food production all the while providing the necessary nutrients we have created a monster. The Western diet consists of a number of chemical concoctions which endanger our health. Just the staggering statistics on health and disease of a century ago versus today is an eye-opener. I recommend this book to anyone who is serious about health and diet - it will change what you eat and the way that you eat it. J. Golden 2/9/08
REAL Food needs to be defended! February 8, 2008 Jennifer Homcy (Haleiwa (North Shore), HI) Pollan is spot on! He explains how the Government is steered by industry in its health guidelines and recommendations to the public. His enlightening and historical account of food science and legislation over the past 1/2 century (and beyond) provide useful information for what we should and should NOT eat today. In his NPR interview on science Friday, Pollan simply said he should have published a postcard instead of a book, because his subtitle says it all: "EAT FOOD, NOT TOO MUCH, MOSTLY PLANTS." Read the book and you will find that most of what American's eat today is NOT real food. He defines our market, lifestyle, and what we know (scientifically or not) about health and the benefits of REAL food, which so far have yet to be recreated better by humans than nature.
Fantastic! February 8, 2008 Belinda D. Craddock (Palm Desert, CA) This book is full of fantastic information, and is very well written. The author explains some thing I already knew so that I have a much better understanding, and introduced some concepts I had never thought about. One of the best books I've read of its kind. I will defintely be recommending this book to friends and family!
