Fun, Fabulous and well worth tryinging... February 3, 2007 Gorey Lorey (Castro Valley, CA United States) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is a really wonderful way to experience the Suhaila method. It's about as close as you can get to her studio as a video can get. She breaks down an undulation in a way that no other teacher does. This is an essential video to add to your fitness collection, for dancers, with a ton of experience under their belt and for the non-dancer as well. It's challenging, inspiring, and Fun! Keep squeezin' those glutes, it takes a long time to get that one down!!!
Good, but for a specific purpose October 12, 2006 Irina Dumitrescu (New Haven, Connecticut) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I won't do a long review, as there are already many opinions here. I just want to say that these videos are good, but not really if you're expecting a normal workout or basic bellydance instruction. In a way, they're for more advanced bellydancers, although I could also suggest them to anyone who enjoys moving her body, becoming more flexible, and gaining control over -- really, I have to say this -- the strangest muscles. The "Buns" video also left me dazed when I first did it. (Why on earth would anyone want to flex her glutes individually, I wondered!) And honestly, since I'm not a performing dancer, I have no practical purpose for it myself! But if you get a kick at all from the process of gaining awareness of and control over your body, these videos are not a waste.
Poor teaching. Too much fusion. Reused material! August 8, 2006 Tamara (USA) 14 out of 22 found this review helpful
Some of these moves are very difficult even for experienced bellydance students (beginners - forget it!), and Suhaila doesn't break them down and doesn't explain. On the other hand, some exercises are too simple and boring and don't require a bellydance or pilates instructor. Still some other exercises are weird and made me doubt if they are useful for dancers or anybody at all. I was disappointed that there was much less dancing here than I expected. I also felt gypped: there is some overlap of exercises between different DVDs of this set.
REALLY great training exercises for serious bellydancers August 6, 2006 Holly Dilshad (Greensbororo, NC USA) 21 out of 21 found this review helpful
I love these DVDs even though they have some very difficult exercises on them. I know from my continuing classes that strength & control are needed to do well and the only way to get both is by practice & exercise. These DVDs are definitely, as I saw mentioned in another review, exercises for belly dancers. I really like Suhaila's instruction too. Each DVD has a focus, but all parts of the body are worked to some extent. She also adds layering in with all 4 DVDs, which is something I am working hard on right now. I skip between the Yoga, Buns, & Pilates in my home practice. There are some periods where the moves are way too fast for me to keep up, but I figure if the women in the video can do it, I should be able to do it too, so I keep on working at it. I can definitely see the value in this! 1. The Yoga DVD is the least intensive workout and focuses on belly exercises (undulations). 2. The Buns DVD has some very difficult exercises & some not so bad. Focus is on shimmies & hip work, standing still & moving. If I could get 2 of these, this would be my 2nd choice. 3. The Pilates DVD seemed to be more all-over, with some very difficult (for me) leg work & good stretches. If I could only get one of these, this would be it. 4. The Jazz DVD is too difficult for me now, but I'll try it again in a few months to see if I can do it. If you are looking for choreography and a wide selection of belly dance moves, look elsewhere. If you are looking for some intense exercises to help you with strength & control in your belly dance - these are GREAT!
not recommended for getting in shape (OR learning the art of belly dance) July 19, 2006 vox unpopuli (New York City, US) 20 out of 31 found this review helpful
Belly dance is a beautiful art form, and Suhaila personally is a most sensual woman, with a very pleasant disposition at that (I have quite an extensive collection of workout videos, I know firsthand this quality is hard to come by in instructors), and yet, if your goal is to get in shape, turn to Jane Fonda's aerobics, or Pilates, or the Reebok Step series with Gin Miller, if you so choose. The gluteus isolation exercises are challenging, ridiculously challenging. Seriously, how does this qualify as belly dance *for beginners*? I thought the speed with which they were able to alternate the buttock squeezes was downright freakish. Apparently you have to have some serious training in belly dance just to be able to keep up (and the other reviewers seem to concur). That was the only part of the workout that required any exertion, however, and when the video was over, I felt like I needed another workout! There *were* about 5-7 minutes of lower body exercises, but I didn't feel it was enough (and I am quite of out shape, as I haven't exercised in about a year and a half), nor was the entire workout balanced. Also, it says on the DVD jacket that the workout portion is 40 minutes long, whereas in reality it is around 30-35 minutes, and the rest is recorded performance. While it is lovely (and you envy the dancers' flexibility and skill), I felt cheated. This is simply not enough "bang for the buck". Oh, and the bonus 10 minutes is just more of the same, so no, it didn't save the day. In all fairness I have to mention that I am writing this after doing only one workout of this set, the Buns (admittedly the "boringest" one, if you read the other reviews). HOWEVER, I do feel that the points I make here are valid, as this video killed my desire to do the rest of the set (I have only so much time for working out, and I can't afford to waste it on useless experimentation), and made me feel like I just wasted $45 (it cost $45 at the time).
