Better than Twilight? I think so! May 14, 2008 Steph R 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I just finished this book about an hour ago, and I can't wait to pick it up again. I fell in love with the character or Wanderer, or Wanda - even though she's part of the "invasion," I found myself rooting for her moreso than Melanie (the human host), until the middle, when they both grew on me. For those of you wanting Twilight w/ aliens instead of vampires, I'm afraid this book isn't as full of the romantic fluff of Bella & Edward's relationship, but that makes it more 'real.' The characters develop feelings, they don't just instantly feel them. Also, the character of Wanda is immensely more likeable than Bella (it took me 3 books to tolerate her). All in all, well worth the time spent reading! The only negative is that the first few chapters were a little slow, but then it picked up the pace. It was also difficult to picture some of the creatures she described, as they had names of creatures on Earth - it was just hard to seperate my view of a dolphin to the book's description of a Dolphin. I totally recommend this though!
better than twilight? i think so..... May 14, 2008 M. Colon (New York) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
wow .. wow.. wow.. W.O.W. that's all i can pretty much say right now. i *just* finished the book and there's just so many thoughts going through my head. i didn't expect to like this book at all seeing as it's sci-fi, but curiosity got the best of me and decided to give it a go. i don't recall a book ever making me cry like this one did. surprisingly it really did. the emotions are just so.. there. and you as a reader can't be help but be torn between wanderer characters and melanie's. i won't get much into since i don't want to ruin it for anyone. do yourselves a favor and pick up this book. even if it is out of curiousty... i promise you won't be disappointed.
The Host May 14, 2008 book lover 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This book was a life saver from God. I was currently out of good books because I was waiting for the fourth book in Stephenie's Twilight series. The Host, though not as adventurous as the typical thriller, is perfect. My only complaint is that the book is described to have a love "triangle", but it is more of a square. There is Melanie, Wanda, Jared, and Ian. Other than that complaint, I loved The Host. The characters are interesting and thankfully different from the Twilight series (that was my one concern; that the main character would resemble Bella of the Twilight trilogy). It is a fun and memorable read which gets you thinking about both aliens and the future.
very disappointed May 14, 2008 notmissy (chicago) 7 out of 9 found this review helpful
I so wanted to love this book, as I am a huge fan of the Twilight series. I did not expect anything similar to Twilight, but was expecting to enjoy the novel because it's written by an amazing author who has me hooked on her stories and writing style. I had a difficult time getting into The Host and staying interested enough to keep picking it up. Some of it was interesting (the lifestyle of the humans in the caves is very creative), but what disappointed me the most was that I was unable to have any feeling for the characters. They bored me. I did not feel what they were feeling...I did not "experience" their love, friendship, sacrifice, trust... I found myself not really caring about any of the characters; I did not form a connection to any of them. I did not feel what they felt at all. And that is something I was hoping for since for me, that is a sign of a great book.
Amazingly Done! A Wonderful Treat! May 13, 2008 Raquel (California) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I'm absolutely thrilled to report that Stephenie Meyer has outdone herself with this one! I still can't get over her ability to take a genre that I have absolutely no interest in and make me an avid fan! I'm astounded and still can't get over it-I want to reread it already! I never thought to actually like Wanderer, simply because I originally saw her as a body thief and an alien, but I ended up liking her immensely. I even cried at one point with pity for her. I won't give anything away on this one; suffice it to say that it's worth the read!
