Burn It with the Banchee Woman! May 1, 2005 L. Becker (PA) 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
I recently bought The Step wich came with Cathe Frederick's Basic Step. After mastering that, I felt I should move on to a more intermediate video and after a little online shopping, decided to purchase this video. You'll definitely get your heartrate up doing the 16 minute step workout, so make sure to have a bottle of water close by! The 2nd 10 minute session will slow it down a bit, but your legs will kill you in the end if your legs aren't really strong yet. The 3rd 10 minute session felt more like a cool down for me than anything else. It was really nice to lie down and stretch my leg muscles. The butt crunches were quite welcomed as well. The propulsion moves are not that intriguing. I find them to be hard on the knees and they do not benefit your heart rate or fitness aptitude. Kathy herself is a good instructer. I could follow her directions very well. However, I call her Banchee Woman because she does these tribal calls when she gets really excited about the exercises. It's kind of embarrassing sometimes! And she also has a man on her team that gives you really alluring looks during the workout. That's kind of creepy. I have a few complaints as well other than the music being a bit annoying-- Kathy's arm movements. She wants you to do these "strong arm" movements, but they are extremely hard to incorporate with the stepping. You'll find yourself tripping over your feet while you try to wave your arms around in the patterns she suggests. Nonetheless, the DVD does what it says - it gives you toned thighs and buns after a dozen or so run-throughs. And that, to me, is the most important part.
burn baby burn June 25, 2004 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
this is one heck of a thigh-toning, butt-toning, high stepping workout! From get go to get gone the moves make you aware of every muscle that is working. A little difficult to follow at first but hang with it and in no time you flow right along. Two thumbs way up!!
Very Impressed! June 4, 2004 This is my first Kathy Smith video. The workout is challenging, yet easy to follow. She gives great cues. I never got lost. You can follow her if you are more advance or follow another group if you are a beginner. In the past, I have always done step at the gym. Kathy's workout is by far the best step workout that I've ever done. I also like the leg workout at the end. She really targets the inner thigh, which most trainers seem to overlook or just barely touch on. A definite must have.
Don't Get It If You Don't Want To Work!! May 31, 2004 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I own several of Kathy Smith's videos, and love them all. She uses steps that are easy to learn, but she really works you hard. This video is no exception! The moves are simple. Most people can probably pick them up the first time through. However, you will really get a good, challenging workout with those moves. I am in pretty good shape since I have been working out regularly for a few years. But there are still days that I do this video and wonder if I will make it all the way through. Beginners may have to work up to doing all the segments. Once you finish the workout you feel pleasantly fatigued and feel a sense of accomplishment. Using the tape over a period of time really brings noticible results too. I highly recommend this video, as well as the whole Kathy Smith line, for people who don't want to learn a bunch of fancy moves, but really want a good workout.
Surprisingly effective May 16, 2004 Deep Water (West Chester, PA United States) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I just got this tape per the recommendations here at Amazon. First negative was having to fast forward through a ton of sales pitches and excessive intro material. Then I was slightly put off by the very dated hair/outfits. But those are my only 2 complaints and they are easily overcome. Wow, Kathy really targets the [back] in a no nonsense manner, tons of squats, slow lunges and non-dancey moves. I definitely worked up a sweat without the frantic jumping from other step videos. I was also surprised that I liked the music -- early 90's funk/rap -- it's kind of catchy -- also it's in the background and just provides a good beat. I loved the burn I felt in my quads, above the knees (a trouble zone for me) and hamstrings. I highly recommend this video.
