Book Review: FITNESS AFTER 40 How to Stay Strong at Any Age by Vonda Wright, M.D.
Are you trying to figure out what is happening to your body? Where did your stamina go? Why is the weight creeping up? Why at every milestone birthday does my body feel more like my enemy than my friend?
Vonda Wright, M.D., is an orthopedic surgeon dedicated to maximizing the potential of athletes in their 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, and beyond. This book helps weekend warriors and older athletic competitors. She lays out how to prevent musculoskeletal injuries and promotes healthy active aging. So if you want to make friends with your body again and improve your health you need to give this book a read. The number of your birthday should not be holding anyone back from activities that they love. You do not need to sit on the sidelines or lament that your best days were in your 20’s.
Dr. Wright has a formula: F.A.C.E. – ing your future: Flexibility, Aerobics, Carrying a load and Equilibrium. These four components are all you need to stay healthy and active and improve athletic performance as your age increases. All four components are clearly broken into chapters and exercise instructions are clear and often contain pictures.
I found this book easy to read, informative, and her explanations on how to prevent muscle pulls and knee soreness were clear and understandable. The chapter on Wear, Tear and Repair provides clear info on what to do when you are injured: when to ice, when to compress, when to elevate. She even discusses what questions to ask your doctor before you go ahead with a joint replacement surgery. And she looks into mental aspects of improving your athletic performance. From stretching to mental attitude all aspects of improving your athletic ability are covered.
This book was released January 2009.
